Vancouver Canucks Green Men Celebrities of Stanley Cup Playoffs
In a series that is becoming more and more about the impact of fans, it could be argued that the Green Men are the Canucks’ fifth line.
The only thing that kept Canucks fans satisfied during the last game, aside from the third-period fights, were the Green Men, who did their job of routinely shaming Bruins sent to the Penalty Box. The Green Men, clad head-to-toe in their infamous green spandex, recently held a sign which read, “I’m with Stupid,” when a Bruin was sent to the box, drawing laughter from the crowd and commentators. Their antics of mercilessly mocking the opposing team’s players who are sent to the Penalty Box have made them an NHL sensation.
Now, with the critical fifth game back to Vancouver tonight, the Bruins will once again face the potent taunts of two of hockey’s most notorious hecklers, Force and Sully.
Force and Sully were born in late December of 2009 when Vancouver hosted the Nashville Predators. Former Canuck, Dave Scatchard, was sent to the penalty box. The Green Men were in the spot they’ve come to be habitually associated with, right next to the opposition’s penalty box. They proceeded to mime crying and trying to climb out of the box. The cameras caught their antics and put it up on the big screen, much to the uproarious delight of the crowd. The taunting got under Scatchard’s skin and he tossed a towel over the penalty box camera. Adding to the thrill of the taunt, the Canucks scored during the penalty and thus, the heroes were born.
Fast forward a couple years and here we are with Vancouver about as close to a Stanley Cup victory as ever before – a fact that is abundantly clear to Vancouverites. If you wander the streets of Vancouver today, it’s impossible to miss the sea of Canucks hockey jerseys and the energy in the air. Yes, everyone is talking about the game. Tied 2-2 with Boston after getting brutalized in game three 8-1 and game four 4-0, this is a Stanley Cup playoffs that has gained some serious momentum and some even more serious cheering from the fanbases of both teams.
Tonight Vancouver enjoys the apparently critical hometown advantage and crowd participation, which seems to be the tipping factor in deciding which team wins. You can be sure that Cancuks fans will be looking to the Green Men for power taunting more than ever – which is why Sports Interaction has posted a series of Green Men props in the Sportsbook.
