The Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox will begin a three-game series in Chicago on Tuesday night.

It has been a tale of two wildly different seasons for the clubs involved. Boston finds itself in last place in the American League East with a 40-48 record. Chicago, on the other hand, is improbably atop the AL Central at 47-42.

This marks the first series between these two teams in 2026 before they meet next month for a three-game set in Boston. The Red Sox went 4-3 in last year’s seven head-to-head matchups, although they dropped two of three in the Windy City before winning three of four at home.

Boston is a -130 favourite on the MLB odds, with the total set at 8.5.

MLB Betting Odds and Trends

Despite their slumping season, Boston has actually won eight of its last 10 games, and could be catching the White Sox at the right time, who have lost three of their last five. The Red Sox’ over/under record on the season is at 41-45-2, while Chicago has been somewhat of an over machine with a 51-36-2 record against the number.

Boston Red Sox

Boston may be dead last in the division, but this club is finally playing good baseball. Its best stretch of the 2026 campaign features an 8-2 record in the last 10 contests, including a three-game winning streak heading into Tuesday’s series opener. Somewhat surprisingly, a once-anemic offence has generated 20 runs during this three-game surge. First baseman Willson Contreras has hit safely in eight of his last nine contests, including two home runs and six RBIs in the last two games.

More good news for the visitors is that Peyton Tolle is toeing the rubber on Tuesday. Tolle is sporting a 3.39 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and a 74-to-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 74.1 innings. Chicago’s unfamiliarity with the left-hander should be an advantage for him. Randal Grichuk (0-for-2 with a strikeout) is the only White Sox player who has ever faced Tolle.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox are obviously doing well to lead the AL Central, but they are by no means on fire at the moment. Chicago owns a losing record dating back to June 13 and has also dropped three of its last five games. Rookie slugger Munetaka Murakami, who has hit 20 home runs despite missing more than a month of action, remains sidelined by a hamstring injury.

Noah Schultz is taking the mound for the home side. Schultz’ ERA has ballooned from its 2026 low point of 2.53 to 5.86 over his past five outings, during which he has lasted more than 4.1 innings only once – and never more than 5.1. The left-hander is also saddled with a 1.35 WHIP and a dreadful 40-to-26 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 43.0 innings of work. He has walked at least four batters in three of his last five appearances.

MLB Prediction: Who Will Win Red Sox vs. White Sox?

This does not project as a favourable matchup for the White Sox. Schultz rarely – if ever – works deep into games, which means their relievers are likely going to see a lot of work. Chicago ranks No. 19 in Major League Baseball with a 4.27 ERA. That’s not to say, though, that the Red Sox are going to completely erupt. They are tied for last in the American League in total runs scored this year (357), and only San Diego has scored fewer in all of baseball. Neither squad has any familiarity whatsoever with the opposing starter, which should also contribute to a relatively low-scoring affair. Let’s go with the White Sox to prevail 5-3.
