Brad Treliving to Replace Kyle Dubas as Leafs GM
Big headlines were made a couple of weeks ago when the Toronto Maple Leafs and Kyle Dubas decided to part ways after another disappointing playoff run. Now TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger’s information points towards another big headline in Toronto is on the horizon: the hiring of Dubas’ replacement, Brad Treliving.
Treliving spent the past nine years as general manager of the Calgary Flames. Similarly to the Maple Leafs, the Flames organization saw brighter days since the mid-2010s, making the playoffs an impressive five times. That said, the club only won two playoff rounds.
It seems like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. As if there wasn’t enough pressure managing any Canadian NHL club, expectations, scrutiny and media attention are arguably at their highest in Ontario’s capital.
It should be highlighted that that among Treliving’s first orders of business is the matter of Auston Matthews’ potential contract extension, which should be dealt with starting July 1.
It certainly will be interesting to see how the Maple Leafs handle the budgetary constraints of their current roster given the amount invested in Matthews, Mitchell Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares.
