Report: Giants QB Jaxson Dart expected to have knee surgery and miss rest of season

New York Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart is expected to have knee surgery that will end his 2026 season, according to multiple reports.

Although Dart’s season is done, the 23-year-old is expected to make a full recovery. The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Dart’s ACL is intact despite surgery being required.

Dart left Monday night’s primetime game against the Los Angeles Rams on New York’s first drive after taking a hit on his left knee. Veteran journeyman Jameis Winston took over under centre for the rest of the Giants’ 28-6 loss.

Initial reports indicated Dart suffered a sprained MCL. On Monday, New York head coach John Harbaugh would not comment on new reports that Dart’s injury was in fact more significant and season-ending surgery was a possibility.

“We’ve learned a lot more,” Harbaugh told reporters. “When we know what direction we’re going to have to go or whatever it might be, we’ll announce that. But we don’t have that yet, so I don’t want to get out over our skis on that.”

Dart completed three of five passes for 20 yards against the Rams before suffering the injury. In Week 1, Dart tossed for 230 yards and three TDs with 54 rushing yards in the Giants’ 28-20 win over Dallas.

The injury to Dart leaves Winston as the only quarterback left on New York’s depth chart as of Wednesday afternoon.

Originally drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, Winston has bounced around the league over the last few years. The 32-year-old also played for the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns before joining the Giants last year as a third-string option behind Russell Wilson and then-rookie Dart.

Winston made three appearances with two starts for New York last season, throwing for 567 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. He also ran for 23 yards and a touchdown.

The Giants are back home to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. New York opened as 6.0-point favourites, but that number has dropped as low as -2.5.

The team will also need to add another quarterback this week to back up Winston. Jimmy Garoppolo is the most experienced free agent available and they could also target another team’s backup through trade.
