Quinn Hughes

The Canucks will receive centre Marco Rossi, defenceman Zeev Buium, forward prospect Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round draft pick from the Minnesota Wild.

Hughes is one of the top players in franchise history. The 26-year-old is arguably the best blue-liner in the NHL not named Cale Makar and he’s two years removed from winning the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman.

The trade likely signals Vancouver’s intentions for some sort of rebuild or retool. The team is looking toward the future as Rossi, Buium and Ohgren are all recent first-round draft picks, in addition to the first-round pick they get from Minnesota in 2026.

It’s not surprising Vancouver decided to move in this direction as they are 11-17-3 and sit dead last in the NHL standings.

There has been speculation dating back to last season that Hughes, who has one year left on his contract after this season, eventually wants to join his brothers Jack and Luke, who play for the New Jersey Devils.

This also comes after the highly publicized issues in Vancouver’s dressing room last season that led to the trade of J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers.

Sorry Canucks fans, but if you still want to make a smart futures play on Vancouver, you can take the team to finish last overall in the NHL at +400.

The Canucks are off until Sunday when they play an afternoon game in New Jersey, ironically against the other two Hughes’ brothers

Minnesota Wild

Minnesota sits third in the stacked Central Division with a 17-9-5 record.

The Wild are likely banking on their ability to convince Hughes to sign a long-term contract. The front office proved how aggressive it is as recently as this past off-season when they signed Kirill Kaprizov to the largest contract in NHL history with a $17 million AAV.

Minnesota can’t begin contract talks with Hughes until July 1, but they will be able to offer him eight years on a contract extension before the new CBA rules limit the max term on contracts to seven years in September.

The Wild are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host the Ottawa Senators as slim -118 favourites. However, it’s tough to envision Hughes being ready to dress in that game.
