Canada’s World Cup roster

This will be the second straight World Cup appearance for Canada and just the third overall. Canada has never advanced past the group stage or won a match, but this is expected to be their strongest roster ever and they are believed to have a good shot at reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

“We have a group of players who are incredibly excited and ready to represent Canada at a home World Cup, in front of our own fans and in our own stadiums. We are looking forward to incredible support from Canadians and passion to push us through and are completely focused on making the country proud. Allez Les Rouges,” head coach Jesse Marsch said.

Canada will compete in Group B, along with Switzerland, Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina for the tournament which is being held in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The Canadians will open the tournament in Toronto on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field, before travelling to Vancouver where they will face Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24, both at BC Place.

Injury concerns

As strong as Canada’s roster is expected to be, there are multiple injury concerns. It all starts with national team captain Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich star suffered a hamstring injury last week that is expected to sideline him four to five weeks, putting his World Cup status in jeopardy.

Centre-back Moise Bombito continues to work his way back after suffering a broken leg in October.

Norwich City midfielder Ali Ahmed left last weekend’s season finale with an undisclosed injury, while Toronto FC fullback Richie Laryea is dealing with a thigh injury, although he’s expected to be ready for the World Cup.

There are multiple other injury concerns, including winger Tajon Buchanan, midfielder Stephen Eustaquio and defender Alistair Johnson.
