NHL Odds: Oilers’ Zach Hyman out until early November
Training camps around the NHL opened on Thursday and the Edmonton Oilers had some disappointing news for fans.
Forward Zach Hyman will be out of the lineup until early November as he recovers from a wrist injury that ended his playoff run in the spring, head coach Kris Knoblauch told media on Thursday.
Here’s what we know.

Zach Hyman
Hyman suffered the wrist injury in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final when he collided with Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment. He missed the remainder of the postseason after undergoing surgery for a dislocated wrist as the Oilers went on to lose to Florida in the Stanley Cup Final for a second straight year.
Hyman finished the playoffs with five goals and 11 points in 15 games. He also led the postseason with 111 hits.
After a career-high 54 goals in 2023-24, Hyman had 27 goals and 44 points in 73 games last regular season.
Edmonton Oilers
The Hyman news comes amid speculation on captain Connor McDavid’s future. McDavid has been eligible to sign an extension since July 1, but he’s currently set to be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Edmonton is hoping for another long playoff run after reaching back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals. Still, the Oilers haven’t won a division title since 1987 and there’s major questions about the roster, particularly regarding the goaltending.
Edmonton enters the season with the second-shortest odds to win both the Pacific Division (+170) and the Western Conference (+425). They have the fifth-shortest odds to win the Stanley Cup at +1000.
The Oilers begin the regular season at home against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 8.
