Duke looks to sweep UNC in regular season finale
The NCAA regular season is winding down but there’s still plenty up for grabs in the final weekend of action before the major conference tournaments get underway. Let’s take a look at some of the match-ups that will attract sports betting interest this weekend.
North Carolina at Duke
Duke, coming in to this game off a defeat at surging Maryland, will seal at least a share of the ACC regular season title if they complete the season sweep of their rivals. It’s hard to look past the Blue Devils in this one. They trounced UNC on the road, despite only scoring three field goals from inside the arc in the first half of that game. Coach K knows a win here and victory in the ACC tournament would be enough to seal a #1 seed in the dance.
Roy Williams will know well that an upset victory for his Tar Heels could harm Duke’s hopes of a deep run in March. That motivation won’t be enough to overcome North Carolina’s lack of talent and I expect Duke to finish off their regular season with a statement victory.
West Virginia at Villanova
If Duke does slip up again in the coming weeks, this result could go a long way to determining who gets the final #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats will be slight favorites, despite losing three of their last five games. A win here over the #10 Mountaineers would go a long way to convincing the committee that the ship has been righted. West Virginia has looked far more convincing of late, including resounding 81-68 win over Georgetown. If they can add Villanova’s scalp, on the road no less, it could propel WVU past Ohio State and become the first alternate #1 seed should Duke falter in the stretch.
While WVU likely has more to gain from victory I’m still going with the Wildcats in this one. Villanova has a more legitimate shot at a deep run in March and the unequalled depth of their bench will prove the difference in what promises to be a close contest.
Texas at Baylor
The Longhorns face a second consecutive Saturday where they have to go to an in-state ranked foe, and for the second straight Saturday they will leave with another loss on their resume. Baylor has one of the hottest teams in the Big 12 right now. The Bears have won 6 of their last 7 games and haven’t lost at home since Kansas State visited on January 26. By contrast former #1 Texas has lost 7 of its last 11 games and is playing like a team that just wants the season to end. This one will be a mauling as the Bears look to maintain their hot streak entering the Big 12 tournament. Of course to win that title the Bears will have to overcome Kansas and it’s diverse fanbase.
