Mayweather, Pacquiao Fight May Break Payout Record
Not only will Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao’s upcoming fight be arguably one of the highest profile boxing matches in recent history, it’ll be one of the richest paying fights we’ve ever seen.
Recent estimates have shown that Mayweather’s payday for the fight could soar as high as $180 million which is much higher than the previously estimated $120 million. Pacquiao’s payout is a bit less but also estimated to be well above $100 million. When it’s all said and done, the two fighters are expected to earn about $300 million in a 60-40 split.

“For whatever it’s worth, the buildup over these years has certainly enhanced the fight,” said promoter Bob Arum. “Everybody knows about it now, even people who don’t follow boxing.”
The fight, which is scheduled for May 2nd, won’t come cheap for those hoping to watch live. Ticket prices inside the MGM Grand are in the range of $1,500 in the upper deck seating area to ringside seats that will cost a cool $7,500. In addition to the hefty price tag, only a limited amount of tickets are being set aside for sale to the public.
MGM Grand expects to pull in roughly $72 million from the event, which is more than three times of the previous fight record of $20 million made in a match between Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez in 2013. With the fight certain to sell out, the remainder of the revenue will come from pay-per-view revenue, which is harder to determine. Fans in the United States are likely to pay around $100 for viewing rights.

Several cable networks that will carry the fight have yet to announce their pay-per-view price, as they’re still in negotiations with third parties that would provide coverage. Typically, these delays are due to ongoing conversation about how money made from the fight will be split up between the broadcasters and the promoters.
Whatever pay-per-view price is set, the match will surely break the record. Mayweather’s biggest payout was in a fight against Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 that paid him $61 million, more than half of the projected total for his fight against Pacquiao.
“You get to this level where you’re making nine figures in 3-6 minutes,” said Mayweather at a press conference earlier this month, “and you have to be a winner.”
