The Blue Jays start what could be a make-or-break homestand on Tuesday night by welcoming the disappointing Kansas City Royals, the last-place team in the AL Central. Toronto opened as a short -116 favourite on the MLB odds with a total of 8.5 runs.

With a nine-game road trip following this six-game homestand against teams with losing records, the Blue Jays really can’t afford anything worse than a 4-2 mark and realistically hope to earn that final AL Wild-Card spot. Toronto’s updated price to return to the playoffs is +210.
Kansas City sits last in the AL Central yet is the hottest team in the Junior Circuit on an eight-game winning streak, the team’s longest since an eight-game run in May 2024, as an offence that had been one of the AL’s worst has woken up in part due to some guys returning from the injured list. The Royals are averaging 6.3 runs per during the winning streak. Still sitting 7.5 games back of the AL’s final Wild-Card spot, it’s too late for this year.
Tuesday marks the first meeting of the season between the clubs, and the Blue Jays visit Kansas City from Sept. 4-6. The Royals won the 2025 series 4-2, including 2-1 at Rogers Centre. Catcher and future Hall of Famer Salvador Perez, still going strong this year for Kansas City, hit .320 with three homers and six RBIs in 2025 vs. Blue Jays pitching. All-Star infielder Bobby Witt Jr. was at .280 with two homers and five knocked in.

Not only has Kansas City won eight games in a row, seven were by multiple runs. Granted, those came against three bad AL teams in the Angels, Athletics and Tigers but still impressive. It was always unlikely the franchise was going to make a managerial change in-season, but this run has assured that Matt Quatraro will stay through the end. Whether he returns in 2027 is another story. Good-looking young outfielder Jac Caglianone (22 HRs, 60 RBIs) didn’t play Sunday with ankle soreness and is day-to-day.
The Royals listened to trade offers for veteran righty Seth Lugo (5-7, 4.71 ERA) at this year’s deadline but opted to keep the 36-year-old and he’s scheduled Tuesday. He has struggled this month with a 7.48 ERA in four starts, but Kansas City is 3-1 in them thanks to the offence bailing Lugo out. He is 3-1 career against Toronto with a 2.52 ERA spanning seven appearances (three starts) over 25.0 innings. No Blue Jays batter has had much success off him. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is 2-for-7 off him with a double.

Toronto had a run of seven straight series wins end Sunday when it lost 8-3 at the Yankees in a rubber match – it was 2-2 entering the bottom of the sixth. Infielder Andres Gimenez sat for a third game in a row with a tight right hamstring. The Jays have won 12 straight games following a loss with a 1.82 team ERA and the offence averaging 4.5 runs per.
Max Scherzer (1-6, 7.40 ERA) takes the mound Tuesday. The 42-year-old future Hall of Famer had pitched well in four outings since his latest stint on the IL but was rocked for seven runs over four innings last Wednesday in a loss at Tampa Bay. Scherzer’s defence did him no favours. Scherzer has made 20 career starts vs. the Royals and is 14-6 with a 3.57 ERA. Salvador Perez has seen him the most of any K.C. batter at 13-for-35 with four homers and two doubles.
