Norris Trophy favourite: Cale Makar

There really should be two trophies for defencemen because the Norris essentially goes to the blueliner with the most points, while the defensive stalwarts are left out in the cold.

But, knowing this, you can’t over look Avalanche superstar Cale Makar at +150 to win the Norris Trophy. The Norris winner in 2022 and 2025, Makar is the highest scoring defenceman over the last three seasons with 248 points in 217 games (1.14 points per game). That point total includes 68 goals, while the next closest defenceman has just 52.

What really helps Makar’s Norris case is how much ice time he gets. He’s averaging 25:34 minutes a night since 2022-23, the second-highest total among defencemen.

You also need to remember he’s the anchor of an elite Colorado power play unit, so he’ll rack up a lot of points on the man advantage.

Norris Trophy value pick: Quinn Hughes

Makar’s biggest competition Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, the 2024 Norris winner.

Hughes simply needs to stay healthy to be in the running for the Norris. He had 59 points in 47 games last season which is a 103-point pace over an 82-game season. That would have eclipsed Makar’s 92 points by a wide margin.

And keep in mind, while Makar is the highest scoring defenceman over the last three seasons, Hughes’ 244 points is only four less than Makar.

Hughes finished third in Norris Trophy voting last season despite missing nearly half the year. If he plays 75+ games this year, he’s great value at +200 to win the Norris.

Norris Trophy field

After Makar and Hughes, it’s not even close in the Norris odds. Columbus’ Zach Werenski has the third-shortest Norris odds at +1100, followed by New York Adam Fox (+1600) and Rasmus Dahlin (+2200) out of Buffalo. Fox actually won the Norris in 2021, but he’s had a major drop off in production since then.
