Connecticut Sun vs. Chicago Sky: WNBA Preview and Prediction
It’s a three-way battle for the WNBA’s worst record this season. The Dallas Wings, Chicago Sky, and Connecticut Sun are within a game of each other for this ignominious honour.
Chicago hosts Connecticut on Wednesday at 8 pm ET, with the loser that much closer to finishing dead last in the WNBA this year. The Sky have put all of their efforts into reaching rock bottom, losing 17 of 19 since mid-July to drop to 9-30. Chicago is 5-15 at home, where it has lost five straight and 11 of its last 12 games.
At 10-30, Connecticut qualifies as the hotter of the two teams. Although the Sun have lost two straight, they have won four of seven, and three of four on the road.
Sun vs. Sky WNBA Odds and Betting Trends
Connecticut enters as the slight 1.5-point underdog on the WNBA odds in this matchup, and their money line carries +100 odds. Meanwhile, Chicago are -120 money line favourites, and the game total sits at 162.
Despite their 10-30 record, the Sun are 22-16 against the spread, including 11-8 ATS on the road, and 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games. The team has covered as both a favorite and an underdog against the Sky this season. Chicago is 17-21 ATS this season, including 7-13 ATS at home. However, the Sky are 5-1 against the spread in their past six games.
The Sun have won six of seven in this series, including two of three this year. Connecticut is 9-4 against the spread in its last 13 games against the Sky. Chicago has played to the Under in nine of 13, while Connecticut has played to the over in four of five. Two of the three previous meetings this season went Under.
Connecticut Sun
The Sun will miss the playoffs for the first time in nine years thanks to a massive rebuild. Tina Charles, who had 22 points and eight rebounds in a 93-76 setback to the Atlanta Dream yesterday, leads the team with 16.2 PPG.
She is averaging 19 points against Chicago this year, including 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 94-84 victory over the Sky just over a week ago.
Chicago Sky
The Sky will miss the playoffs for the second straight season. The continued development of their second-year standouts, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, is the biggest positive for the franchise going forward.
Reese leads the team with 14.6 points and the league with 12.6 rebounds. She is averaging 15.7 points and 11.8 rebounds over her last 10 games. That includes 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 79-69 loss to the Seattle Storm on Saturday. Reese has 22 double-doubles this season, including five straight, seven in her last eight games, and 19 in her past 23 contests.
Cardoso is averaging 13.3 points and 8.4 rebounds. She had nine points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Seattle. Cardoso is averaging 17.3 points and 7.7 rebounds against Connecticut this year, while Reese is averaging 11 points and 12 rebounds.
WNBA Prediction: Who Will Win Sun or Sky?
WNBA diehards may be the only ones watching these teams at this point, but Connecticut is on a positive enough run to at least make this compelling for their end-of-season run. Look for the Sun to defeat the Sky and clinch the season series with an 82-74 victory.
