The United States has a 4W-1D-1L record against Sweden during World Cup tournaments. The Americans last lost to the Swedes in 2011, with a final score of 2-1. During the 2015 event, the matchup resulted in a 0-0 draw.

United States

The USWNT is in unfamiliar territory. They managed to move on from the Group Stage, finishing second in Group B, but barely, and they’re now facing plenty of scrutiny for the way they’ve performed so far, not only from the press, but from former players. Carli Lloyd, one of the best players of all time for the U.S., called the USWNT’s performance “very lackluster.”

She was referring to the 0-0 draw with Portugal on Tuesday, where the American side could not put together any effective scoring chances. Not only were they unable to score, they were saved from being scored on in a tense moment when a Portugal shot pinged off the US goal post. A few inches to the left, and it’s likely that the USWNT would have been eliminated.

Making things more difficult as the US prepares to play Sweden in the Round of 16, is that they’ll be without one of their veterans. Rose Lavelle got a yellow card against Portugal and one in her game against the Netherlands. Two yellow cards in the World Cup is an automatic one-game suspension.

Sweden

Sweden is one of seven countries who have qualified for every single FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, as are the USWNT.

This Swedish team is currently ranked at No. 3 in the power rankings and they’re coming off a fairly breezy Group stage, in which they won all three of their games, outscoring their opponents 9-1. The only goal they conceded was in their opener against upstart South Africa, in a 2-1 win. They then went on to decisive 5-0 and 2-0 shutouts against Italy and Argentina.
