After handily beating Finland 11-1 in their second prelim game, Canada will face their first real challenge of this tournament – a Russian team coming off a 5-2 win over Switzerland in their preliminary round opener. The ROC was then shut-out of scoring against the American team, who beat them 5-0.

Sarah Fillier scored twice, and Sarah Nurse and Brianne Jenner both earned hat tricks in their game against Finland on Friday night. The final score was a lopsided 11-1 when the dust settled at Wukesong Arena in Beijing.
Netminder Ann-Renée Desbiens was brilliant between the pipes once again, stopping 28 shots in her second appearance at these Olympic games.
Canada is now 2-0 in the tournament, with a combined 23 goals over just two games.
Canadian Mélodie Daoust did not play in the game against Finland, after taking a hard hit into the boards in their opening game. The team released a statement about Daoust’s prognosis, saying:
“Mélodie continues to be assessed by our medical team and will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis before determining a timetable for her return. We anticipate she will be able to return to compete at some point during the Olympic tournament.”

The ROC spent the early days of their Olympic games experience in isolation after their team was hit by one of the biggest COVID outbreaks of the games so far. Regardless, when their depleted roster took to the ice against Switzerland in their opening matchup, they still managed to earn a convincing 5-2 win.
Six of Russia’s 23-player roster from are currently unavailable after testing positive for COVID, including captain Olga Sosina.
