Euro 2021 Odds and Betting Analysis

The Danes are expected to roll to three points this weekend, armed with the always-valuable home-field edge and boasting a more seasoned international team than their Finnish foes. Denmark last played on the international stage in World Cup qualifying back in March and looked positively dominant, rolling to victories over minnows Israel, Moldova and Austria by a combined 14-0 count. Finland is coming off a pair of draws in WC qualifying play.

Oddsmakers are expecting this one to be a bit of a defensive struggle, with the U2.5 play at -172 and the O2.5 set at +124. It’s difficult to assess Denmark’s recent international play given the inferior quality of competition, and these teams haven’t faced off since 2011. That said, Finland’s final five European Championship qualifying matches all exceeded the total, while Denmark scored a whopping 23 goals in its eight group fixtures.

Team Denmark

The pressure is on the home side to repeat the success of bygone years. Denmark won the Euro title in 1992 but hasn’t come close to it since, with its best showing an eighth-place result in 2004. Christian Eriksen will be the focal point of the Danish approach to this tournament; he has 36 goals in 106 career international caps and will be called upon to help Denmark augment a stout defence with enough of an offensive attack to fend off Russia for second place.

Team Finland

You would hardly know that this is the same national team that came up empty in Euro 2016 qualifying, failing to win any of its 11 matches. The Finns finished a distant second to Italy in Euro 2020 group play and hope to duplicate their qualifying run behind the capable boot of star striker Teemu Pukki. The Norwich threat has been a one-man show for Finland, scoring 10 of their 16 goals in qualifying and all three tallies in the team’s two recent World Cup matches.
