Golf: Cheyenne Woods Looks to Emulate Uncle Tiger
Tiger Woods’ niece Cheyenne is a chip off the old block, tearing her way through Golf’s amateur ranks. Having recently conquered the ACC, Al Dannity looks at the younger Woods’ prospects for the NCAA Championship and a possible LPGA career.
Big shoes to fill
The look is all too familiar. Those determined eyes, unflinching as they follow the path of the ball. There’s tension in the face, while the peak of the cap darts straight ahead. No wonder Cheyenne Woods draws so many comparisons with her uncle Tiger. The Wake Forest player captured the ACC title last month, much like Tiger once won the Pac-10 Championship, but faces an uphill task to match her uncle’s achievement of adding the NCAA crown. Cheyenne Woods is the best player on a strong Wake Forest program but one that is only ranked #14 ahead of this month’s NCAA Championships.
Tiger’s talent is era-defining, it would be near impossible to expect his niece to be in the same class. The daughter of Tiger’s estranged brother Earl Jr has however been able to take some inspiration from her uncle. In addition to communicating with Tiger, Cheyenne’s game has been fuelled by the constant media attention she has received. These distractions could have derailed a player of lesser talent but the challenge of handling such obligations has enabled the younger Woods to improve her focus.
The impact on her game has been immense. In the two years since she missed the cut as a wildcard to an LPGA event in New York, Woods has developed to the point that she now has 30 amateur titles to her name. Whatever doubts existed over her potential to step up to the professional game have been well and truly quashed. Unlike her uncle, Cheyenne Woods plans on finishing her degree in Wake Forest but at just 20 years old she should still be quite young when she enters the pro ranks. Arriving with the NCAA title on her resume would add fuel to the inevitable hype machine.
