Canada has already made history just by reaching the knockout round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and now they look for their second-ever knockout win when they face Morocco in the Round of 16 in Houston on Saturday afternoon.

Injuries have impacted Canada’s Starting XI at this year’s tournament, but manager Jesse Marsch also hasn’t been afraid to tinker with the top of the lineup by his own decision.

Marsch has gone with two strikers to start each of Canada’s four World Cup games, while Jonathan David is the only one who has stayed in place. Cyle Larin and Tani Oluwaseyi have each started next to Jonathan David, while Promise David has made his case as an impact substitute.

So, who will start next to Jonathan David  in the Round of 16 against Morocco? Let’s get into it.

Canada lineup

Most soccer pundits had Larin pencilled in to start Canada’s World Cup opener, but Marsch flipped the script by goiing with Oluwaseyi to begin the game. Larin, however, made the bigger impact with Canada’s only goal to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina for Les Rouges’ first-ever World Cup point.

Larin earned his way into the Starting XI for the second game against Qatar, opening the scoring in the 16th minute of an eventual 6-0 blowout. The Brampton, Ontario native also started Canada’s 2-1 loss against Switzerland in the group stage finale. He picked up a yellow card in the first half of that game before being subbed off in the 57th minute.

Oluwaseyi replaced Larin against Switzerland. Promise David, however, made the biggest impact, scoring Canada’s lone goal just one minute after replacing Tajon Buchanan in the 75th minute.

Marsch went back with Oluwaseyi in the Starting XI against South Africa in the Round of 32. Oluwaseyi was replaced by Promise Daivd in the 70th minute, while Larin didn’t see the pitch because Canada used all of their five substitutes before Stephen Euestaquio’s game-winner in stoppage time.

Between Larin, Oluwaseyi and Promise David, only Oluwaseyi has appeared in all four of Canada’s games, although he hasn’t scored. The 26-year-old has six total shots in the tournament with three on target.

Larin has two goal on nine shots with four on target.

Promise David has one goal on five shots, with all three of his shots on target coming against Switzerland. There are some concerns about the 25-year-old’s fitness level as he continues to recover from surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his hip in February.

Jonathan David has been the sole constant up front for Marsch. He has started all four games for Canada, posting a hat trick against Qatar. Jonathan Daivd ranks sixth in the tournament in total shots (15) and tied for fifth in shots on target (eight).
