Edmonton Oilers vs. New Jersey Devils Prediction, NHL Odds

Edmonton began the trip with an ugly 3-2 loss at Buffalo on Monday, keeping the Oilers just a single point ahead of L.A. for second in the Pacific Division. New Jersey’s in a division race themselves, as a recent slump had dropped the Devils to third in the Metropolitan but a pair of wins has kept them some breathing room from the Wild-Card.

Puck drop at the Prudential Center gets going at 7:30 p.m. EDT with the Oilers a -140 moneyline favourite and the total at six on the NHL odds.

Oilers vs. Devils NHL Betting Odds

The back-and-forth style of game typically is where the Oilers thrive — Edmonton’s 5-4 win on Saturday and 3-2 loss Monday depict exactly that. New Jersey tends to lock things down, ranking second in goals against per game this season (2.53), fourth in penalty kill percentage (82.8%), and fourth in shots against per game (26.3). But as most of the NHL finds out, sometimes you get forced into the run-and-gun style with Edmonton. And the Oilers have been a different beast for the Devils as of late, with the over hitting in all of Edmonton’s last five trips to New Jersey.

Edmonton’s struggled to come out with wins on the road, going 1-5 in their last six overall. This turn started after the Four Nations break, although oddsmakers aren’t doubting the Oilers yet as they enter as road favourites at New Jersey.

The health of Connor McDavid was under the microscope after his Four Nations title, but the Oilers captain appears to be back in fine form. McDavid’s coming off a two-point night on Saturday in which both of the resulting goals were off fabulous plays by the captain, and McDavid now has multi-point games in three of his last four showings — not to mention an eight-game point streak.

Stuart Skinner has played in three straight games for Edmonton and is in line to make it four despite Thursday kicking off a back-to-back for Edmonton. In seven games since the Four Nations break, Skinner has posted a save percentage above .900 just once.

Forward Mattias Janmark missed Wednesday’s skate with an illness but head coach Kris Knoblauch said he’s hopeful Janmark can play against the Devils.

New Jersey Devils

New Jersey’s starting to find some offence as they deal without having an injured Jack Hughes in their lineup. Jack’s brother Luke Hughes had a goal and an assist in Tuesday’s 5-3 against Columbus, while Jesper Bratt led the way with a one-goal, two-assist night. Deadline acquisition Cody Glass has fit in just well with the Devils too, notching two assists in the win Tuesday. Glass scored in his New Jersey debut and is centring a line between Erik Haula and Bratt.

Tuesday’s win was especially big for goalie Jacob Markstrom, who picked up his first win since January 11. Markstrom returned from injury on March 2 and hasn’t been too sharp yet, but also hasn’t seen a lot of action. Facing McDavid and the Oilers might be a different story for the Devils goalie.
