Argonauts vs. Stampeders Prediction: CFL Week 9 Point Spread, Odds

The Stampeders return home in the wake of a crushing 33-6 loss in Ottawa last weekend, but have risen to the occasion on home turf, where they have compiled a 3-0 record including outright wins in two straight while pegged as betting underdogs. The Argonauts are coming off a narrow 16-14 win in last week’s date with the slumping Winnipeg Blue Bombers but have failed to tally consecutive wins since opening their campaign on a 2-0-0 run including losses in two of three road games to date.

The Argonauts’ road woes have helped lift the Stampeders to 3-point home favourites on the CFL Week 9 odds. Toronto lags as a +150 underdog on the CFL moneyline, while the total is listed at 49.5.

CFL Odds and Betting

Sunday evening’s matchup represents the first half of a home-and-home series between these teams. Calgary has largely dominated the Argos over the past decade, winning 15 of 18 meetings since the start of the 2014 season including eight of nine of home turf at McMahon Stadium.

The Stamps have been consistently effective at shutting down the Toronto offence when facing the Argonauts in Calgary, limiting the Boatmen to just nine total points over their past two visits and to 16 or fewer points in six of their past eight home meetings. And while the Stampeders have surrendered the third most points in the CFL this season, they have been steady defensively at home, allowing just 22.3 points per game during a 3-0- start.

The Argos managed to contain the offensively challenged Bombers in last week’s win, but have given up at least 27 points in five of their first seven games, and have now seen the OVER pay out in five of their past six road contests.

Toronto Argonauts

Last week’s win over Winnipeg failed to resolve the quarterback controversy swirling around this team. In fact, it may have made matters worse. Cameron Dukes found himself on the bench after tossing for just 37 yards in the first quarter. But the struggling pivot, who has tossed just one scoring pass in the past five games likely maintains his starter’s job for now after backup Nick Arbuckle failed to spark the offence while completing just 12 of 22 pass attempts for 87 yards and no scores after taking over from Dukes.

The Argos’ ineffective passing game places more pressure on the squad’s weary defence and on top rusher Ka’Deem Carey. The CFL veteran has compiled a combined 636 passing and rushing yards and four total scores. Carey has produced just one TD over the past three games but the former Calgary Stampeder is a solid -125 bet on the CFL player props to score a touchdown against his former teammates on Sunday night.

Calgary Stampeders

The Stampeders will be eager to atone for their brutal performance in last week’s lopsided loss to the RedBlacks when they return home on Sunday. After opening the scoring with a field goal, the Stamps were steamrolled by the RedBlacks, surrendering 26 unanswered points while compiling just 274 yards of offence.

It was a particularly tough night for quarterback Jake Maier, who was sacked four times while getting limited to just 136 passing yards and failing to find the end zone for the first time this season. Maier saw his night end early in Ottawa after the RedBlacks put things out of reach, but the 27-year-old is expected to be back under centre on Sunday to face a Toronto squad he lit up for four touchdowns and 387 passing yards in a 39-31 loss at ZBMO Field last August.
