The 111th Grey Cup from BC Place is set for Sunday between the Blue Bombers and Argonauts. Winnipeg will play for the championship for the fifth straight season after blowing out Saskatchewan 38-23 in the West Final. The Argonauts are back in the Grey Cup after a 30-28 win over Montreal in the East Final, but the win came at the expense of their starting quarterback.

The Blue Bombers opened as seven-point favourites to win on the CFL odds, with the total pegged at an even 50.0.

CFL Odds and Betting

The line has fluctuated quite a bit for this game. After Winnipeg opened favoured to win by a touchdown, early betting action moved the line to Bombers to -10.5 at one point. It’s come back down to -9.5, but it’s worth monitoring as it gets closer to Sunday.

Toronto won both regular season meetings, but it was an incredibly tight series. The Arogs won 16-14 in overtime in Week 8, although Nick Arbuckle finished with just 87 passing yards. Chad Kelly was under centre for Toronto’s 14-11 win in Winnipeg in Week 19, but he won’t even travel with the team for the Grey Cup after suffering a severe leg injury in the East Final.

This is a rematch of the 109th Grey Cup, which the Argonauts won 24-23. Interestingly, that’s the game that elevated Kelly to starter status as he replaced an injured McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Arbuckle will be looking for a similar story on Sunday.

Both teams have been average cover options in 2024. Toronto is 10-9-1 against the spread and Winnipeg is 9-10-0 ATS. The Argos are the hotter team, covering the spread in five of their last six games, with one push. The Bombers have failed to cover in two of their last three dates.

These teams trend in totally opposite directions on the Over/Under. Toronto has hit the Over 14 times, while Winnipeg has played the Under 14 times. Both head-to-heads this season failed to top 30 points, so that might be all you need to know when it comes to the total.

Toronto Argonauts

The big news surrounding the Argonauts is obviously the fractured ankle Kelly suffered in the East Final. That thrusts Arbuckle into the starting position, which undoubtedly makes Toronto a weaker team, but still gives them a chance to win. Arbuckle only has one start this season, so it’s tough to evaluate him, but he’s been serviceable overall. The 31-year-old journeyman has appeared in five games this season, sporting a 65 per cent completion rate with 799 passing yards, four TDs and three interceptions.

Running back Ka’Deem Carey will be a massive part of Toronto’s game plan for the Grey Cup. Carey, who had the third-most rushing yards in the CFL during the regular season (1,060), put up 92 rushing yards in the East Final and he should be able to cook against a Winnipeg rush defence that ranks in the bottom half of the CFL.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Bombers have made five straight Grey Cup appearances, but they have the bitter taste of losing the last two. Winnipeg bounced back from an 0-4 start to 2-6 before winning nine of their last 10 games, including an eight-game win streak. The Blue Bombers have dealt with the losses of star receiver Dalton Schoen and middle linebacker Adam Bighill to season-ending injuries, before becoming arguably the most well-rounded team in the CFL.

The three-headed monster of Zach Collaros, Brady Oliveira and Kenny Lawler has kept Winnipeg going. The trio were humming in the West Final, easily playing their best game of the year. Collaros finished with 301 passing yards and four TDs, Oliveira put up 119 rushing yards and a touchdown and Lawler had a ridiculous 177 receiving yards and three TDs. Toronto had the second-worst pass defence in the CFL this season, so look for the Collaros-Lawler connection to be key in the Grey Cup.
