New York Liberty vs. Connecticut Sun Prediction: WNBA Betting Odds

New York’s woes have been punctuated by the loss of seven-time All-Star Breanna Stewart. The two-time league MVP suffered a right-knee injury against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. The Liberty, 17-9 overall, are 0-2 without Stewart and now sit five games behind the Minnesota Lynx in the league standings.

The Sun are at the start of a massive rebuild. Connecticut is a league-worst 4-21 and is all but certain to miss the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons. New York has won four of five games against Connecticut this season, including a 100-52 victory over the Sun in June.

Liberty vs. Sun WNBA Odds and Betting

The Liberty are 4-1 straight up and against the spread on the WNBA odds board in their last five games against Connecticut. However, New York has not performed well recently in the trends, as it is just 2-8-1 ATS on the road this season, including 0-4-1 in its last five contests away from Barclays Center.

Connecticut, despite its dismal record, is 5-2 against the spread in its last seven games, and has posted a 6-7 ATS record at home.

Both teams are consistently contesting high-scoring games. Connecticut games have gone over in four of the last five, while New York has played to the over in five of its last six contests overall, and seven of eight on the road.

New York Liberty

A 17-9 record is nothing to feel bad about, but the Liberty have already lost more regular-season contests than in each of the past two seasons. New York went 32-8 both years, reaching the WNBA Finals twice and winning the first title in franchise history last season.

The loss of Stewart is dominating the headlines for New York. The nine-year veteran is averaging 18.3 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds, but a bone bruise in her right knee will keep her out indefinitely.

Jonquel Jones, who was recently out for a month with an ankle injury, returned after the All-Star break and is averaging 16.4 points since rejoining the lineup.

Connecticut Sun

It’s hard to find good news coming out of Connecticut, which has averaged 26.5 wins per season over the past four years. This year’s four-win squad is leagues behind the 2024 team that finished the regular season 28-12. That squad had DeWanna Bonner, Brionna Jones, Alyssa Thomas, DiJonai Carrington, Marina Mabrey and Tyasha Harris averaging in double figures.

Only Mabrey is left from the group. She is second on the team with 14.3 points while Tina Charles, the 2010 No. 1 overall draft pick who returned to the Sun this offseason after spending her first four years with Connecticut, leads the squad with 16.1 points and 5.8 rebounds.

WNBA Prediction: Who Will Win Liberty vs. Sun?

The Liberty are reeling a bit, but this matchup could be the reset they need. The Sun have lost 15 of their last 17 games, and their last 10 defeats have come by an average of 18 points. That number doesn’t even include the 48-point blowout they suffered against New York in June. While that result came two months ago and Stewart is out of the lineup tonight, the Liberty still have enough firepower to take control and cover the spread.

This looks to be an easy win for New York. The Liberty should cover the 10.5-point spread as favourites and get back into the win column with a predicted 89-67 victory tonight
