Newcastle vs Manchester United: Premier League Odds, Prediction
Each club has played 26 games, fewer than most of their English competitors. That can be explained by the fact that they made it all the way to the League Cup final in February and thus has to reschedule some Premier League dates. United are in third with 50 points and Newcastle fifth with 47.
The Premier League odds denote Newcastle as the slightest of favourites at +141 to the Red Devils’ +177.
Newcastle vs Manchester United Betting Analysis
The 2-0 victory over the Magpies in the Carabao Cup at the end of February was far from the only success Manchester has tasted when playing the men from up north. Including that silverware-earning win, ManU is undefeated in its past seven contests against Newcastle. That said, the last two Premier League encounters ended in draws, including at Old Trafford last October.
From here on end, every week will have both clubs playing the most important game of the season. While all Newcastle has to play for is a spot in the top four, that alone means the world for the club and its fanbase. It hasn’t witnessed its heroes partake in such lofty continental football since the 2003-2004 season. There was worry that the cup loss to this weekend’s opposite number deflated their momentum, but they come into this match as winners of their previous two tilts.
For the Mancunian outfit, it’s a matter of pride to restore Champions League participation. It won’t be easy as they simultaneously tangle with foes in both the FA Cup and Europa League, neither of which this weekend’s opponents need to concern themselves with. Still, a ticket to next season’s major club tournament and, possibly, three trophies would be a very strong first season under Erik ten Hag.
Newcastle
Eddie Howe’s outfit was among the first to finish league play before the international break on the Friday over two weeks ago by the time this game happens. The contest versus Nottingham Forest at City Ground proved more challenging than they bargained for.
To be fair, some fortune smiled upon Forest, with the visitors hitting the woodwork not once but twice throughout the game. The first attempt would have opened the scoring, but Nottingham got off the hook, so to speak. Then, in what amounted to a brain freeze, a horrendous back pass from Newcastle’s defence to keeper Nick Pope failed to take into account Emmanuel Dennis. The forward took the ball for himself and lofted it over Pope and into the net. Newcastle would not be deterred. First-year Newcastle man Alexander Isak made good on an excellent breakout against the run of play just before halftime and slotted in a confident penalty in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. The Magpies win 2-1.
Manchester United
Contrary to Newcastle, the boys from Manchester enter this contest with less momentum than they’d like to have. Their next-to-last game before the break was the historic disaster at Anfield where Liverpool crushed them 7-0 –this author predicted a United win…
After that was a frustrating match back home against Premier League bottom dwellers Southampton. Casemiro, not for the first time this year, landed in hot water by committing a pretty rash challenge in the 34th minute. The gesture earned him a red card and a view of the rest of the match from the seats. Erik ten Hag’s men pushed as best they could and produced some excellent scoring opportunities. They may have been down a player, but quality-wise they had a vastly superior lineup. The contest would end in a 0-0 draw. Since then, United has marched on in other competitions (FA Cup and Europa League). Marcus Rashford has been terrific all season and has just entered new contract talks with the club.
