Poland managed to back into the knockout stage despite falling 2-0 to Argentina in their group stage finale, clinching second place in Group C on tiebreakers after closing out their schedule knotted with Mexico at 1-1-1. Already assured of top spot in Group D, France closed out their group stage schedule with a 1-0 loss to Tunisia, and look to the round of 16 trailing only Brazil and Argentina as a +490 to repeat as world champions.

Winners in eight of their past 10 knockout stage contests, France look to Sunday’s contest perched as heavy -382 favourites, while Poland trail as distant +1000 underdogs. The odds of Sunday’s contest ending in a draw after 90 minutes sit at +422, while -121 odds favour the total topping 2.5.

France v Poland

  • Draw +464
  • Poland +646

Sunday morning’s matchup at Al Thumama Stadium marks the first meeting between these two national teams since 2011. France has picked up at least a points in seven straight dates with the Eagles across all competitions, but it was Poland that escaped with a 3-2 win in their lone previous meeting at the World Cup, in the third-place game back in 1982. France have kept clean sheets in five of their past seven overall clashes with Poland, outscoring the Eagles by an 8-2 margin while going 3-4-0 over that stretch. Les Bleus also outscored opponents by a wide 6-3 margin while going 2-0-1 in group stage while the Eagles were blanked twice in Group C action.

France

Winners in just one of six UEFA Nations League matches prior to travelling to Qatar, France have come alive at this year’s tournament. Les Bleus left no doubt while rolling to a 4-1 victory over Australia to open their schedule, and followed up with a 2-1 win over Denmark that clinched them the top of the table. Kylian Mbappe has once again emerged as the star of this uber-talented French squad. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar potted both French goals in last weekend’s win over Denmark, and also tallied a goal and an assist in their win over the Aussies. Not surprisingly, Mbappe has emerged as a strong +232 favourite to claim Golden Boot honours as the tournament’s top goalscorer.

Poland

While France fills the net, Poland’s greatest asset heading into Sunday’s contest may likely be goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. The Juventus star entered this year’s on a roll, allowing just one total goal in his final six outings with both the Eagles and Juve. Overall, the 32-year-old has also blanked opponents in four of his past five appearances with the national team.  Another stingy performance by Szczęsny could be crucial given the Eagles’ struggles to bulge the twine. The squad’s two goals in their win over Saudi Arabia represent the only offense the team has produced in seven outings across all competition. The victory over the Green Falcons represented somewhat of a breakthrough for team captain Robert Lewandowski, who scored once and set up the other marker in the 2-0 win. However, Lewandowski has scored just twice over his past eight appearances with the Eagles, representing a third of the team’s total goal production over that stretch.
