Only time will tell if the Carolina Hurricanes’ effort in the last two matches were too little and too late, but they have made it a series against the New York Rangers. Facing a sweep on home ice in Game 4, they now head back home after winning that fourth contest, then Game 5 in New York by the score of 4-1. The Hurricanes have the momentum, but the Rangers can erupt at any moment, making this an incredibly interesting game.

For Game 6, the NHL Playoff odds believe the Hurricanes will win and push the series to a decisive seventh match. They’re priced at -165 on the moneyline.

Rangers vs. Hurricanes NHL Betting Odds

How the tables have turned. It’s still a bit early to start thinking that the Hurricanes can completely flip the script. They are at least halfway there, having changed a 3-0 deficit into a 3-2 deficit with, it must be added, a game at home to level the terms. Even so, only four clubs have ever captured a best-of-seven series after losing the first three matches.

None of that changes the fact that betters wanting to pin their hopes on the Canes can feel better about themselves. Carolina’s odds have gone from +500 entering Game 5 to +200 heading into Game 6. The Rangers winning the series is now -200.

We discussed this topic a few days ago when previewing the fifth contest, but the Rangers have some demons to exorcise. The 2022 conference finals and last season’s first-round series should serve as reminders about what happens when an early series lead is not capitalized on.

New York Rangers

Ironically, Jacob Trouba received the Mark Messier Leadership Award on Tuesday. The night before in Game 5 he opened the scoring for the hosts.

It was a wonderful play at that. New York’s special teams have been scintillating throughout the postseason. In Game 5, Trouba took advantage of a Hurricanes turnover on the power play to zip down the ice on a two-on-one and wrist a shot past Canes netminder Frederik Andersen. Leading 1-0, playing relatively well, and with the crowd behind them, it should have been the Rangers’ night, but it was not meant to be. New York never performed a major push in the final frame and finished the match with only 21 shots on target.

A bit concerning is that Igor Shesterkin has looked human in three of the five games in this series. In each instance, his save percentage was well below .900.

Carolina Hurricanes

For the Hurricanes, the equation is simple. Continue to fight like mad until it’s too late. It’s worked through two matches so far.

Not only have the Hurricanes sliced their series deficit from 3-0 to 3-2, but both Games 4 and 5 were decided late. In Game 4, Carolina netted its first power play goal of the series with minutes remaining in a tied contest. In Game 5, they trailed 1-0 heading into the third period on the road. That’s when Ron Brind’Amour’s men found an extra gear and performed the necessary push to get over the edge. In fact, everything changed in six and a half minutes. Jordan Staal (first) slid the puck past Shesterkin at 3:33 whilst fighting off a defender. Evgeny Kuznetsov (fourth) pounced on a juicy rebound at 6:39. Then, Jordan Martinook (second) wristed a shot through some traffic from in close at 9:56.

From then on it was a matter of repelling some New York pressure and adding an empty, which Martin Necas (third) handled with aplomb. Canes win 4-1.
