Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Ottawa Senators Prediction, NHL Odds

Thursday night in the NHL brings us a packed slate of 10 games, including an Eastern Conference battle between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators. This is the first of three matchups between the two this season.

The Eastern Conference is ultra-tight, as there are only 14 points separating the top and bottom. These two points are important, which is why I’m giving you my best bets for tonight’s tilt between Pittsburgh and Ottawa.

The Senators are -165 favourites to win on the NHL odds, with the total set at 6.5.

Penguins vs. Senators NHL Betting Odds

Against the spread (ATS), the Pittsburgh Penguins have been excellent at 21-11, while the Ottawa Senators have been poor at 13-19. In the game totals, the Senators are 18-13-1 to the Over, while the Penguins are 16-14-2.

Pittsburgh and Ottawa face off three times per season. Last season, Ottawa was better, going 2-0-1. Over their previous 10 meetings, Ottawa is 7-2-1. In the goals department, Brady Tkachuk (+135) and Tim Stutzle (+150) lead the way for the Senators in goal-scoring odds, which also leads the entire list. Sidney Crosby (+160) and Bryan Rust (+200) lead things for the Penguins.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have cooled off and are struggling to find momentum. After a red-hot start to the season that saw them go 8-2-2, their record now sits at 14-9-9, putting them in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division. They are not out of the water yet, as they are tied for the least amount of games played in the Eastern Conference (32) and are just four points from second in the Metropolitan Division.

This is a veteran-savvy group that needs to make sure they are prepared for this game and each one going forward. Things won’t stay this tight all season, and they could quickly fall out of the race if their run of 0-2-4 continues. Key forward Evgeni Malkin remains out with an injury, which is a shame as he had an incredible start to the season. However, the task is for the remaining players on the ice to break this six-game winless streak.

Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators have also been losing ground within the standings. With a 15-13-4 record, they sit seventh in the Atlantic Division. They have posted a mark of 4-7-0 in their last 11 games, prolonging their poor play that needs to change as soon as possible. However, they have won two of their previous three games, with a tight road loss to a strong Minnesota Wild team. I think they have a decent team with many elite talents, and this short-term success may continue as they dig deep for consistency.

They are missing a few key players in this contest, with Thomas Chabot, Shane Pinto, and Lars Eller out. However, I still expect them to make things very challenging for Pittsburgh on their home ice.

NHL Prediction: Who Will Win Penguins vs. Senators?

While the Senators come into this game as heavy favourites against the Penguins, I think we are in for a close finish. Both teams are clearly desperate to turn around some poor recent play, but we have seen far more signs from Ottawa that they may be turning the corner.

There is a ton of star talent on display in this game, with Sidney Crosby and Brady Tkachuk leading the way, and in what I expect to see as a high-scoring game, I expect the Senators to come out on top by a 5-3 scoreline.
