Edmonton Oilers vs. Carolina Hurricanes Prediction, NHL Odds
The Hurricanes are priced at -120 and a total of 6.5 goals on the NHL betting odds.
Oilers vs. Hurricanes NHL Betting Odds
It’s quite rare for Carolina to be this short of a home favourite because the franchise has been so good for so long. I think the various books are completely overvaluing a mediocre Edmonton team, but the Hurricanes are also playing their second game in 24 hours. It’s like betting the helmets in an NFL game instead of actually the on-field results. The Oilers are a very public team thanks to Connor McDavid.
Could this be a Stanley Cup Finals preview? Certainly possible and that exact matchup is +2500. The two current favourites are Hurricanes-Avalanche and Panthers-Avalanche at +1600 each. The Canes and Panthers are each +350 favourites in the East. I do think Carolina wins the conference. I don’t believe the Oilers threepeat in the West, currently priced as +480 third-favourites.
These clubs have split the past three season series, with Edmonton winning 3-1 in Raleigh last year. McDavid (2G, 1A) and Leon Draisaitl (3A) led the Oilers with three points each in the series. Stuart Skinner lost his start, allowing three goals, while Calvin Pickard won his, giving up one. Shayne Gostisbehere, Martin Necas and Sebastian Aho led the Canes with three points each; Necas is now with Colorado.
Carolina has won seven of the past 10 home meetings. The over is 4-2 in the past six overall.
Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton is 1-1 on this monster seven-game trip following a 5-4 loss in Columbus on Thursday in the second of a back-to-back. Note that this is not part of one, so it should be Stuart Skinner in net after Calvin Pickard struggled vs. the Blue Jackets. That score was a bit misleading as Columbus was clearly the better club. There were two bright spots, though. Evan Bouchard had his seventh career three-assist game and tied Darnell Nurse for the second most by an Oilers blueliner behind Hall of Famer Paul Coffey (32). And Connor McDavid became the league’s first player to 20 assists in a season for the fourth time in his career. The record in such is six by Wayne Gretzky. McDavid is an absurd -460 for just one point tonight, and that’s about as short of odds as you will ever find for that prop. I obviously can’t recommend that, but two points is +106. One very piece of good news, though: Forward Zach Hyman will make his season debut off injury. Edmonton is 1-5 in its past six road games.
Carolina Hurricanes
Part of the reason this moneyline is so low is that Carolina is in the second of a back-to-back after a 4-3 OT home win over Vancouver on Friday. Taylor Hall’s fourth goal of the year tied it at 6:26 of the third – he of course was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft by the Oilers and spent his first six seasons there – and Sebastian Aho’s seventh goal of the season won it in OT. He’s annually one of the most underrated guys in the league. It was Aho’s his 17th career overtime goal to tie Ilya Kovalchuk and Mark Scheifele for seventh most in NHL history. Carolina has some injury concerns led by forward Seth Jarvis (10G, 6A), who left Friday’s game. Because Pyotr Kochetkov started Friday, it should be former Leaf Frederik Andersen tonight in net. He is 3-2-0 at home with a 3.42 GAA and .869 SV. Seems likely a lot of goals tonight overall. The over is 8-1 in Carolina’s past nine at home.
