NHL: Calgary Flames to Announce Craig Conroy as GM
On Sunday TSN’s Salim Nadim Valji tweeted that there will be a big announcement out of Calgary this week, possibly as early as Tuesday. It looks as if the Flames found their new GM: Craig Conroy.
He will be replacing Brad Treliving, who left the organization after the conclusion of this past regular season. Incidentally, Treliving leads the odds to be the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Calgary Flames: Treliving Out, Craig Conroy In
Shortly after the end of a disappointing campaign, it was made public in April that the Calgary Flames and Brad Treliving had mutually agreed to part ways. Much like with Kyle Dubas in Toronto, Treliving’s contract ends on June 30.
Craig Conroy is no stranger to the Flames organization, be it on the ice or in a managerial position.
Calgary faithful will recall that the American had two stints as a player with the franchise, serving as club captain in the 2002-2003 campaign. More memorably he was a key component in the Flames’ magical postseason run in 2004 when the team reached the Stanley Cup final, losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games.
For his career on the ice, Conroy tallied 182 goals and 360 assists during an impressive 1,009 contests.
But after hanging up his skates in 2011, he was hired as assistant GM by the Calgary Flames in 2014 and he has been with the club ever since.
While the Flames recently experience two terrific regular seasons in 2018-2019 and 2021-2022, neither translated to much playoff success and the club even missed the playoffs this year – 38 wins, 27 losses and 17 OT or shootout losses. That resulted in the firing of coach Darryl Sutter after three seasons.
The Return of Jarome Iginla
Another tidbit that was shared by Valji on Sunday was that the hiring of Craig Conroy improves the odds of fan favourite Jarome Iginla returning to the club in some sort of managerial capacity.
It needs to be emphasized that this part of the story is not official. In any event, the former Flames great has said he wishes to continue coaching at the RINK hockey Academy. Then again, enjoying being part of an academy and being a part of an NHL franchise in the front office are two different prospects. We shall see what comes of this angle, if anything.
