Toronto FC vs. Chicago Fire MLS preview and prediction
Toronto FC and Chicago Fire close out the Fire’s four-game Canadian road trip on Saturday at BMO Field, and both clubs arrive in about as good a spot as they’ve been all season.
Chicago sit third in the Eastern Conference with 37 points from an 11-4-6 record, while Toronto have climbed to 25 points on a 5-10-7 mark – still outside the playoff picture but riding real momentum. Neither team has lost in five MLS matches, with Chicago drawing 2-2 at Seattle last time out and Toronto salvaging a point at home against New York City FC.
The history here, though, still tilts heavily toward the visitors, and that’s the tension at the heart of this one.
Toronto FC vs. Chicago Fire MLS Odds and Betting Trends
There’s no runaway favourite priced into this one the way there often is when Chicago travels. The hosts are +185 underdogs on the MLS odds, the draw is +260 and the Fire are +125 road favourites. The over/under is 3.0; both sides carry -110 odds. A 2-2 finish, the exact scoreline Toronto and Chicago produced last October, is priced at +1000.
That goals-heavy read tracks with the eye test: these two have combined for at least two goals in each of their last five meetings, and both attacks have been productive of late – even if neither defence inspires much confidence.
Chicago Fire
Gregg Berhalter’s side has quietly put together its best form of the year. Chicago trailed twice in Seattle before Robert Lewandowski headed home the equalizer in the 82nd minute, extending the Fire’s unbeaten run to five and matching their best stretch since a similar streak in March and April. Hugo Cuypers remains the engine of this attack with 13 goals on the season, and Philip Zinckernagel has quietly racked up five goals and eight assists alongside him. Chicago will be without Andre Franco and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, though the club used the closing days of the transfer window to add reinforcements, with Anzor Mekvabishvili in line for his full debut, and former Mainz defender Andreas Hanche-Olsen is also expected to feature.
The head-to-head history is what makes this match lopsided. Chicago have not lost to Toronto in eight consecutive meetings dating back to 2022. It’s their longest active unbeaten run against any MLS opponent and the fifth-longest such streak against any team in club history.
Toronto FC
Toronto have been the story of late summer in MLS, and Saturday gives them a chance to finally end their misery against this particular opponent. After stunning Inter Miami in South Florida on August 22, the Reds returned home to open a three-game stand against NYCFC and again showed resilience, conceding first before substitute Dániel Sallói equalized in the 70th minute. Sallói has been Toronto’s best player in that run and leads the club with six goals and four assists on the season. After impressing off the bench, he could return to the starting XI on Saturday.
The bigger concern is a banged-up group behind him; Toronto will be without Deandre Kerr, Jonathan Osorio, Nelson Palacio, Lazar Stefanovic and Niklas Dorsch, a list that includes one of their more experienced midfield voices in Osorio. Toronto’s issue against Chicago specifically has been consistency rather than effort. They’ve been competitive in nearly every recent meeting without ever finding a way to close it out, and they haven’t beaten the Fire since 2022.
A home crowd and a five-game unbeaten run give them reason for optimism, but the absences in midfield make it harder to see Toronto controlling this game the way they’ll need to to snap the streak.
MLS Prediction: Who Will Win Toronto FC vs. Chicago Fire?
Best bet: Over 2.5 goals
Both teams are unbeaten in five while scoring freely to get there, and the head-to-head trend backs it up further. I like Chicago to eventually find a way through given their dominance in this series and Toronto’s thinned-out midfield, but I don’t expect the Reds to go quietly at home. Cuypers and Sallói both carry real scoring threat into Saturday, and with Toronto missing key defensive-midfield cover, this has the look of an open, back-and-forth match rather than a cagey one.
Final score prediction: Chicago Fire 2 | Toronto FC 1
