Mammoth vs. Oilers NHL Odds, Prediction and Picks: Edmonton Favoured in Clash of Division Leaders
The Edmonton Oilers look to seize the top of the Pacific Division standings with a sixth straight victory when they return home to face the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night in NHL betting action at Rogers Place. The Oilers completed the sweep of a three-game California swing with Tuesday’s 4-1 victory in Los Angeles, and have surrendered just five total goals over their past four contests. The Mammoth eked out a narrow 5-4 victory over Toronto on Tuesday and enter Thursday’s action perched atop the Central Division standings with a 5-2-0 record. .
The Oilers return home as -120 favourites on Thursday’s NHL odds. The Mammoth trail as +105 underdogs, and the total is listed at 6.5.
Mammoth vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds
The Mammoth claimed their first win over the Oilers since their move to Utah, a 6-5 overtime victory when these teams last met in April. That win snapped a five-game head-to-head slide in which the Mammoth were outscored by a massive 26-10 combined margin. Not surprisingly, the OVER has paid out in five of their six all-time meetings.
The Oilers have been dominant at both ends of the ice during their red-hot start, outscoring opponents by a 15-5 margin in their past four games after allowing 13 total goals while going 1-0-1 in their first two outings. Indeed, the Oilers have gotten stingier as their early games have progressed, allowing just one total goal after 40 minutes in their past four outings. Edmonton’s early success is reflected on the Stanley Cup odds, where they sit among the favourites as a +800 bet.
The Mammoth have stormed out of the gate on the strength of a potent offence that has scored 4+ goals in each of their five wins to date. However, they are coming off their toughest defensive effort to date in Tuesday’s loss to the Maple Leafs and have surrendered 4+ goals in three of five outings since opening the season with a pair of wins by a combined 10-1 margin.
Utah Mammoth
Tuesday’s victory over the Leafs showcased the Mammoth’s offensive depth. Five different players scored including Daniil But, Vincent Trocheck, Mikhail Sergachev, Dylan Guenther and MacKenzie Weegar. Trocheck and Weegar are among a number of important offseason pick-ups by this club. Trocheck has developed instant chemistry with Logan Cooley and Guenther, giving Utah another dangerous scoring combination. Captain Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz lead the Mammoth attack. Schmaltz entered Tuesday with six goals, including four on the power play while Keller has picked up at least a point in six of seven outings to date. The Utah defence is also contributing offensively, potting six total goals, tied for second-most in the NHL entering Thursday.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers have opened the season with five victories and an overtime loss despite an extraordinary collection of injuries. Edmonton has scored 29 goals through six games, with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl continuing to drive the attack. McDavid recorded four points, including a goal, in Monday’s 4-1 victory over Los Angeles while Draisaitl tallied two points in his third multi-point performance in five games. Vasily Podkolzin scored twice in that contest and has already accumulated five goals this season. Podkolzin’s emergence has been particularly important given the absence of several established forwards including Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Matt Savoie, and Mattias Janmark. The club also remains without veteran netminder Frederik Andersen, leaving NHL bettors to wonder how long this team can continue to perform at this level.
