Los Angeles Kings vs. Edmonton Oilers Game 3 Prediction, NHL Playoff Odds
Edmonton is a -135 favourite on the NHL odds with a total of six goals.
Kings vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds
This is the third game of a Stanley Cup playoff triple-header on Friday, but the only Western Conference matchup. With Los Angeles winning Game 2 by a score of 6-2 at home to go up 2-0 in the series, it is now -475 on the series line (was -235) and Edmonton +360 (was +195). The favoured exact result is Kings in five at +250 with a sweep at +290. I think there’s almost zero chance of a sweep.
Edmonton is 1-10 all-time when trailing a best-of-seven series 2-0, and 1-8 when starting it on the road as this one did. The team is 31-23 overall in Game 3s in a best-of-seven and 18-12 at home. Los Angeles is 7-1 in a series when leading 2-0, and 2-1 when starting at home. The franchise is 18-25 in Game 3s and 2-6 on the road.
We have not come remotely close to a shutout yet with 11 and eight goals scored in the first two. That there will be no shutouts in the series is now -275 (was -140). One game is +280, but I really don’t see it. That no games go to overtime is the +125 leader, followed by one at +135, and I do believe at least one goes that far after Game 1 nearly did.
Edmonton was 1-1 at home vs. Los Angeles during the regular season, winning 1-0 on Jan. 13 behind a Stuart Skinner shutout but losing 5-0 on April 14 when Calvin Pickard was in net – the Kings used both No. 1 Darcy Kuemper and backup David Rittich in that one. The Oilers were without numerous key players, including Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Los Angeles Kings
We perhaps shouldn’t be surprised the Kings held serve at home as they are now a stunning 33-6-4 on home ice this season including playoffs compared to 17-19-5 on the road. But Los Angeles scoring six goals in each game of the series thus far is certainly a surprise.
Adrian Kempe was the No. 1 star in the 6-2 victory in Game 2 with two goals and two assists. Fellow forward Anze Kopitar was the No. 2 with a goal and three helpers. They became the first set of Kings teammates to each record four points in the same playoff game since Game 2 of the 1992 Division Semifinals when Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey did so in a Kings 8-5 victory against their former Oilers team.
Los Angeles had two power-play goals in Game 1 and three more in Game 2 – its first time with three in in the playoffs since Game 2 of the 2013 Conference Semifinals. The Kings are the fourth team in the past 30 years to score six goals in each of their first two games of a playoff year. Only two clubs have scored at least six in three straight all-time: Chicago in 1985 and Boston in 1977.
Darcy Kuemper has started the first two in net and no reason for that to change. He was 11-8-5 on the road during the regular season with 2.37 GAA and .909 SV. Good numbers, but not close to his amazing home statistics. The Kings are 2-7 in their past nine in Edmonton.
Edmonton Oilers
Will Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch make a change in net to Calvin Pickard? That seems quite likely after Stuart Skinner was torched for 11 goals in 58 shots in the first two games and was pulled down 5-2 in the third of Game 2 for Pickard, who was 9-5-1 with a 2.94 GAA and .884 SV in 13 home starts this season – his road splits were better.
It won’t matter who is in net if the Edmonton special teams don’t improve as Los Angeles has five power-play goals in the series, while Edmonton is 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Leon Draisaitl (second of series) and Viktor Arvidsson (first) had the goals in the Game 2 loss, but Connor McDavid in a major rarity was held without a point. Draisaitl now has at least a point in 16 straight playoff games vs. Los Angeles to tie Wayne Gretzky for the third-longest such postseason points streak vs. one opponent. The record is 19.
One bright spot of Game 2 was the season debut of forward Evander Kane. He had a shot in 14:46. In addition, veteran blueliner John Klingberg was activated off long-term injured reserve prior to Game 2 and had an assist and three blocked shots. The Oilers are 7-3 in their past 10 at home.
