The Florida Panthers finally solved the New York Islanders on Wednesday, edging them 3-2 to get on the board in their qualifying series. It was the Panthers first win in six tries against the Islanders this season and now trail 2-1 in the series.

Have the Panthers finally figured something out or was that simply a one-off? Let’s take a closer look at Game 4.

Islanders vs. Panthers NHL Playoff Odds

After an over in Game 2 with the six-goal effort, the two teams got back to unders in Game 3 with just five scores in total. That now makes an under in nine of the last 11 meetings between the teams.

The Panthers win improved their record against teams with a losing record to 14-22 this season. The team that’s been favored in this series has won six of the last eight meetings.

New York Islanders

The Islanders lost Game 3 of the series but they probably shouldn’t worry too much. They were undisciplined in this game, coughing up five power play opportunities to the Panthers; Florida had a total of four chances through the first two games of the series. Overall, the Panthers had a pretty effective power play this season as they finished 10th in percentage (21.3%) and power play goals scored per game. The Panthers scored twice on the power play in this game, which was essentially the key factor. On the other hand, the Isles had just three power play opportunities versus the seven that they had in Game 2.

I don’t really feel like this was a changing of the guards here so much. I still think this game was mostly played at the pace that the Isles wanted to play at but they just played from behind. They should be able to get back to normal and dominate the Panthers as they had in the previous meetings this season.

Florida Panthers

The Panthers finally find a way to beat the pesky Islanders, winning 3-2 on Wednesday to get on the board. Florida averages 3.30 goals per game on the year (sixth-most in the NHL) but hadn’t scored more than two goals in any meeting with the Islanders this season. They finally broke through on Wednesday, getting that deciding third marker. What’s surprising is that the Panthers still didn’t get many shots on net – firing a series-low 22 pucks on Semyon Varlamov – but it didn’t matter as they beat him three times. They also finally played with more than a one-goal lead – pulling ahead 3-1 early in the third period – which took a lot of pressure off of them.

The Panthers did get the win here but it also feels like they did just enough; it wasn’t exactly dominating. That’s a bit of a concern as we move forward.
