New York Islanders vs. Edmonton Oilers Prediction, NHL Odds
Losers in 10 of their first 13 contests, the Oilers pushed the reset button over the weekend, firing head coach Jay Woodcroft, and replacing him with the man who coached Connor McDavid during his junior hockey days, Kris Knoblach. The coaching change comes in the wake of a decisive 4-1 win in Seattle on Saturday. However, the Oilers have failed to tally consecutive wins while going just 5-14 in 19 games since the starts of the second round of last spring’s NHL playoffs. The Islanders open a four-game road trip riding a four-game losing streak, capped by Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Washington, but have won two of their past three on the road.
The Oilers lead the way as -175 home favourites on the Monday NHL odds, and are pegged at +135 on the puck line. The Islanders trail as +145 underdogs, and -120 odds favour the total going OVER 6.0.

Touted as Stanley Cup contenders before the start of the season, the current campaign has so far been a disaster for the Oilers. Edmonton has picked up just one win on home ice, and sits near the bottom of the NHL team stats in scoring and goals allowed per game. The Oilers have been defeated by multi-goal margins in six of 10 losses to date, and have been limited to two or fewer goals in seven of their first 13 contests. Last season’s Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner, McDavid has mustered just two goals in 11 appearances, and has been held off the scoresheet in four of the past five games. Leon Draisaitl has not fared much better, scoring just once in the past 10 games. However, the Oilers have tightened up on defence, surrendering just 18 shots on goal in each of their past two games.
The Islanders have cooled off considerably since earning at least a point in eight of their first 10 games. The club the club has struggled at both ends of the ice during their current four-game slide, surrendering at least four goals in each of those losses while mustering just two goals per game over that stretch. In fact, the Islanders have managed to score more than three goals just twice so far this season, and lead only the Capitals and Sharks in team scoring with 2.46 goals per game. The Isles’ scoring woes extend to recent visits to Edmonton, where they have scored two or fewer goals nine times while losing 10 of 11 since March 2003.

Despite his recent struggles in the crease, Ilya Sorokin is expected to get the call for the islanders on Monday night. Sorokin has been rocked for 4.00 goals per game while earning the win in just one of his past six starts, and has also led the isles to defeat in six of seven road appearances since last March. Brock Nelson remains the team’s top goal scorer despite scoring just three times in the past 10 games. However rearguard Noah Dobson has remained a steady producer, recording three assists in four games to bring his team-leading point total to 12, and sports +135 odds on the NHL player props to pick up at least one helper on Monday.
Edmonton Oilers
Already struggling to find their form, the Oilers now face the pressure of rewarding their new coach with a win in his NHL debut. While Connor McDavid continues to enjoy short -140 odds to produce multiple points on Monday despite his recent woes, Zach Hyman has quietly emerged as the team’s steadiest producer during their woeful start to the campaign. Hyman led the charge with a hat trick in Saturday’s victory over Seattle to bring his goal total to a team-leading seven. The 31-year-old has also scored in each of his past three home appearances against New York, and is an attractive +140 bet to find the back of the net on Monday night.
