This has been a trying year for the Calgary Flames. At 2-8-1, the Flames sit at the very bottom of the league, one point below the San Jose Sharks. We knew the team was beginning a major rebuild, but I didn’t expect such a rough start to the season.
However, the Flames are beginning to put some key young pieces in place. They are set in net with Calder Trophy runner-up Dustin Wolf, and have key skaters like Zayne Parekh and Samuel Honzek making their mark.
That said, they will be in a tough spot to take down the Senators on home ice because Ottawa has a far deeper team and greater expectations to hold a higher standard.
Ottawa Senators
After making the playoffs last year for the first time since the 2016-17 season, the Senators have been off to a mediocre start this year. They are 5-5-1, looking both great and miserable at times. To speak to this, they are coming off a 7-3 loss to a weak Chicago Blackhawks team on the heels of a 7-1 win against a strong Washington Capitals team and a 7-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.
Even with this inconsistency, the team still has a strong roster despite captain Brady Tkachuk’s extended injury absence. I expect them to come out hungry after an extremely embarrassing loss. Plus, they are on home ice, which always helps.
NHL Prediction: Who Will Win Flames vs. Senators?
The two rosters hitting the ice tonight are at a far different level of strength. The Senators are a high-flying squad with threats throughout the lineup, and they have shown they can work without their captain on the ice.
There has been minimal explosiveness and good energy in Calgary, and I don’t anticipate that to change just yet – especially on the road. I expect a 5-2 win for Ottawa.
