Anaheim Ducks vs. Edmonton Oilers Game 5 Prediction, NHL Playoff Odds

After ending up on the wrong side of a controversial goal call, the Edmonton Oilers have their backs against the wall as they get set to host the Anaheim Ducks in a do-or-die Game 5 on Tuesday night.

There’s been no shortage of goals in this series, with each team finding the back of the net at least three times in every game. That trend continued in Game 4 on Sunday as Anaheim came out with a 4-3 overtime win.

Heading into Game 5, can the Ducks reach the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2017, or will the Oilers show up when it matters most?

Edmonton is a -170 favourite to win on the NHL odds, with the total once again set at 7.0.

Ducks vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

The Over has hit or pushed in every game this series and you just have to look at some basic stats to see why. Anaheim leads the postseason with an average of 5.00 goals per game, while the Oilers are tied for second at 3.75 gpg. Conversely, Edmonton is allowing the most goals per game in the playoffs and the Ducks are allowing the third-most. That’s a recipe for high scoring games.

Oddsmakers tepidly gave Anaheim the edge after Game 3, but they’re full onboard now. The Ducks are currently listed as -425 favourites to win the series on the NHL futures board. That’s up from -125 entering Game 4.

If one side rises, the other falls. In this case, it’s the Oilers. Edmonton is now a +325 series underdog, which is a far cry from the -235 price they had entering Game 1.

The favoured exact series result stands as Anaheim winning in six games at +230. However, if this goes seven games, the Oilers winning is +325, while the Ducks in seven is +600.

Anaheim Ducks

Ryan Poehling was the overtime hero in Game 4, scoring just 2:29 into the extra frame. Cutter Gauthier, Jeffrey Viel and Mikael Granlund also scored, while Jackson LaCombe and John Carlsson each had a pair of helpers. The OT winner was extremely controversial with a long review. No camera angle could definitively tell whether the puck crossed the goal line or not and because there was not enough evidence to prove or disprove a goal, the call on the ice of a goal stood.

While Anaheim’s OT winner remains controversial, they’ve earned this 3-1 series lead. Looking into the deeper stats, the Ducks are third in high-danger shots on goals (34) and tied with Buffalo for first in high-danger goals (nine) in this postseason. Alex Killorn has been particularly effective as a Swiss Army knife. Killorn (2G, 3A) is the only player in the playoffs with at least one point at even-strength, on the power play and on the penalty kill.

Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton once again only has themselves to blame after another blown lead. The Oilers were up 2-0 after the first period, but were outscored 3-1 over the final two regulation frames. They’ve scored first every game this series, but can’t seem to close things out. Evan Bouchard, Kasperi Kapanen and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had the goals on Sunday, while Tristan Jarry stopped 34 of 38 shots faced.

Yes, you read that correctly, Jarry, not Connor Ingram. Jarry, who hadn’t played since April 8, got the start after Ingram posted a 4.70 goals-against average .849 save percentage across the first three games of the series. It was Jarry’s first playoff start since May 15, 2022 and he should get the nod again in Game 5.
