The Oilers return home in the wake of a 3-2 loss in Vancouver on Saturday night, but have posted consecutive defeats just once during a 20-6-1 run that has lifted them into the race for the top of the division. The Capitals open a five-game road trip in Edmonton riding a four-game win streak, capped by Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh, and now enjoy a five-point lead over Toronto in the race for the top spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Oilers return home perched as -135 home favourites on the Tuesday NHL odds. The Capitals trail as +115 underdogs and the total is set at 5.5.

Capitals vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

Tuesday night’s matchup marks the first of two regular season meetings between these clubs. The Oilers dominated while sweeping their season series with the Caps last season, outgunning Washington by a 12-2 combined margin in a pair of victories, and have now earned the win in six of nine overall meetings including four of five at Rogers Place. The Oilers have also been steady at both ends of the ice during their recent surge, allowing just 2.20 goals per game during their current 8-2-0 run but have seen three of their past wins come by just a single goal. The Capitals struggled to maintain consistency during a recent 6-4-3 run during which they went just 1-4-1 on the road but have rediscovered their form while winning four straight, allowing just two total goals over that stretch, and have allowed one or fewer goals in five of their past six contests.

Washington Capitals

Considering the Capitals have managed to score an average of just 2.67 goals over their past six games, their recent stinginess has come at the right time. Logan Thompson has been a force between the pipes. The 27-year-old netminder has stopped 91 of 93 total shots faced while earning the win in four straight starts and has compiled a sparkling .948 goals against average and allowed more than two goals just twice while going 9-0-1 over his past 10 starts. Pierre-Luc Dubois contributed a goal and an assist in Saturday’s win over the Penguins and has recorded nine points in his past 10 games but has picked up just one total point in four road outings. Alex Ovechkin remains 20 goals shy of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record after being held off the scoresheet on Saturday but have bulged the twine in eight of his past 10 road appearances, racking up 12 total goals over that stretch.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers have emerged as the hottest team on home ice since opening the season with wins in just two of their first eight dates at Rogers Place. The club has won 13 of 15 home games since and have surrendered just eight total goals while winning their past six. However, the club must not take the ice for the next three games without Connor McDavid, who was suspended on Monday for a nasty but understandable crosscheck to the face of Conor Garland in Saturday’s loss to the Canucks. That adds to the pressure on Leon Draisaitl, who has picked up at least a point in 20 of his past 21 games and tops the Tuesday NHL player props as a +800 bet to score two or more goals for the second time in as many games.
