Two teams with fading playoff hopes clash in Week 18, as the Baltimore Ravens host the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Ravens saw their current losing streak extend to five games with last week’s 20-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and now need a win on Sunday, combined with losses by the LA Chargers and Indianapolis, and a loss or tie by Miami to clinch an AFC wild card. The Steelers improved to 3-2 in their past five with Monday’s 26-14 win over Cleveland, but need a victory on Sunday combined with a Colts loss and anything but a tie in Sunday night’s clash between Las Vegas and the Chargers to qualify for the postseason.
Baltimore has vaulted to a 6-point favourite since opening at 4.5-point chalk. However, the betting action has increasingly moved toward Pittsburgh, with 64% of sports bettors backing the Steelers. The total has fluctuated since opening 42, and currently sits at 41.5, with the OVER attracting 62% of bets.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Sunday afternoon’s matchup at M&T Bank Stadium marks the second meeting of the season between these AFC North rivals. With their stunning 20-19 comeback victory over the visiting Ravens in Week 13, the Steelers have now posted three straight head-to-head wins, and have covered twice during that stretch. The Steelers have also won and covered in three of four visits to Baltimore since 2016. Low scoring has been commonplace in recent meetings, with the total topping 40 just twice over the past seven. Accordingly, the UNDER has gone 8-5-1 over their past 13 meetings.
While the Ravens are winless in their past five, they have covered in five of seven overall. However, they have paid out in just two of five as home chalk, and are winless against the spread in three straight at home while favoured by five or more points. The Steelers have struggled with consistency, failing to cover in consecutive games while going 7-9 against the spread this season. They have also covered just once during a four-game road losing streak.
Pittsburgh Steelers
All eyes will be on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in Sunday’s contest. With Big Ben expected to retire at season’s end, his teammates will be highly motivated to cap his career with a victory and a potential trip to the postseason. Roethlisberger has been battling pectoral and shoulder injuries that limited him at Wednesday practice, and has averaged just 143.3 passing yards and tossed for just two scores against two picks over the past three weeks. With Big Ben hobbled, Pittsburgh will look to rookie rusher Najee Harris for another big performance after he scampered for 188 yards and one score in Monday’s win over the Browns.
Baltimore Ravens
The status of injured quarterback Lamar Jackson remains uncertain after he sat out Wednesday practice. Jackson has been on the shelf since suffering an ankle injury in Week 14. If Jackson is unable to go, rookie Tyler Huntley could be in line for his third start in four games. Huntley has produced mixed results, connecting on three total scoring passes, but received little help last week, compiling just 190 yards and tossing one pick while getting sacked five times.
