NFL Spreads Week 9: Best Picks Against the Spread

Frank Doyle | Updated Oct 04, 2017

Peyton Manning Andrew Luck

Peyton Manning may not be the quarterback he once was and that’s fine for the 7-0 Denver Broncos.

Andrew Luck was the man to replace Peyton Manning in Indianapolis. Now he’s the man who will try to put a dent in the Denver Broncos‘ perfect 6-0 start.

Well, that’s if he’s in one piece by the time Sunday evening rolls around.

Luck has reportedly been playing with fractured ribs since Week 3, which goes a long way in explaining some of Indianapolis’ problems this year. On the other sideline, much has been made of Manning’s descent, but the 39 year old is still putting up numbers where they matter most: the win column.

NFL Spreads Week 8: Best Picks Against the Spread

Thursday Night Football

Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals

Point spread: Bengals -10 / Bengals -10.5

Total: 46.5

This is a big trap game for the Bengals, who play at home on a short week after a tough win at Pittsburgh. Cincy is tough, but this is a difficult spot and a lot of points to cover.

Pick against the spread: Browns +10

Green Bay Packers at Carolina Panthers

Point spread: Packers +2.5

Total: 46.5

The mark of a really good team is one that wins when it doesn’t play well. That’s the Carolina Panthers. Carolina didn’t have a good showing against Indy last week but this squad is the real deal.

Pick against the spread: Panthers +2.5

Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Jets

Point spread: Jets -7

Total: 42

Word has it Ryan Fitzpatrick plans to play through a thumb injury on his non-throwing hand and if he does, the Jets are a good bet here. They’ll see this as a statement game after last week’s ugly loss in Oakland.

Pick against the spread: Jets -7

Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills

Point spread: Bills -3 / Bills -2.5

Total: 44

The best thing about the Buffalo Bills’ bye week was that they’re coming back to work relatively healthy. Tyrod Taylor, Sammy Watkins and Karlos Williams could all be back in action Sunday, which is bad news for Miami.

Pick against the spread: Bills -3

Oakland Raiders at Pittsburgh Steelers

Point spread: Steelers -5 / Steelers -4.5 / Steelers -4

Total: 48

Just as the Steelers got Ben Roethlisberger back in the mix, they lose running back Le’Veon Bell.  While DeAngelo Williams should fill in admirably, the Steelers are still a little out of sync and the Raiders are capable of putting points on the board.

Pick against the spread: Raiders +5

St. Louis Rams at Minnesota Vikings

Point spread: Vikings -2.5 / Vikings -2

Total: 40.5

The Vikings took advantage of a Bears blown coverage and scored twice in the last minute to get out of Chicago with a win last week. They’ll have a lot tougher time picking up yards on the ground against St. Louis.

Pick: Rams +2.5

Tennessee Titans at New Orleans Saints

Point spread: Saints -8

Total: 48

The Titans have managed just 13 points in their last two games. New Orleans should roll at home here.

Pick: Saints -8

Washington at New England Patriots

Point spread: Patriots -14

Total: 52.5

As bad as Washington is, we’re talking about a two-touchdown spread coming of a bye week. If Washington can’t cover this number this team has officially hit no-wager status.

Pick against the spread:  Washington +14

Atlanta Falcons at San Francisco 49ers

Point spread: Falcons -4.5 / Falcons -7.5 / Falcons -7

Total: 45.5

Sloppy play is catching up to the Falcons. They’ve dropped two of their last three and haven’t covered a point spread in more than a month. That should change this week when they visit the sloppiest team in the league.

Pick against the spread: Falcons -4.5

New York Giants at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Point spread: Giants -1 / Giants -2.5

Total: 47

Two of the worst defences the NFL has to offer collide in Tampa Bay. This is a huge game for the Giants with New England looming before their bye two weeks from now. Expect another big day for Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr.

Pick against the spread: Giants -1

Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts

Point spread: Broncos -3 / Broncos -5.5

Total: 45

This is another tough matchup for Andrew Luck and the Colts. Luck clearly isn’t anywhere near 100 percent and could be running for cover again this week against Denver. Actually, scrambling might be Luck’s best option to move the chains because the Broncos will tee off on him in the pocket.

Pick against the spread: Broncos -3

Sunday Night Football

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys

Point spread: Eagles -2.5 / Eagles -3

Total: 44.5

The Eagles were held to 17 rushing yards in a 20-10 loss at Dallas in Week 2, but they’ve improved since then with victories over the Jets, Saints and Giants before last week’s bye. Philly’s offence will be out for revenge.

Pick against the spread: Eagles -2.5

Monday Night Football

Chicago Bears at San Diego Chargers

Point spread: Chargers-4

Total: 49

It’ll be interesting to see how the Bears’ solid secondary makes out against a Chargers team that can light up the scoreboard. Chicago could have a tough time keeping up with Matt Forte and Eddie Royal banged up.

Pick against the spread: Chargers +4
