NFL: Ranking the 5 Best Super Bowls of All Time (VIDEO)

The biggest game of the NFL season takes place on Sunday but what was the greatest Super Bowl of them all? Al Dannity casts an eye through history to pick his top five.

Honorable mentions
Before we get to the top five, there were some notable games to miss out. ‘Wide right’ wasn’t enough for Super Bowl XXV. Likewise Super Bowl XXXIV was a Kevin Dyson stretch away from making the list.

#5 Super Bowl XIII
Pittsburgh Steelers 35 Dallas Cowboys 31
Most of the games on this list are remembered for triumph in the face of adversity. The lone exception was this epic where the Cowboys put together one of the great comebacks in NFL history. Trailing by 18 points with 6 minutes to play, Roger Staubach led Dallas on two touchdown scoring drives. It was not to be however as the Steelers recovered a second onside kick attempt by the Cowboys to hold on for victory.

#4 Super Bowl XLII
New York Giants 17 New England Patriots 14
You’re going to hear a lot about this game in the days leading up to Super Bowl XLVI. It was the game where David Tyree made an incredible catch to keep the Giants’ game-winning drive alive. It was the match-up that finally saw Eli Manning emerge from Peyton’s shadow. The Giants brought some big defense that day. They may need to do the same this Sunday.

#3 Super Bowl III
New York Jets 16 Baltimore Colts 7
In terms of a sporting spectacle, this game barely warrants a mention. In terms of shaping history, there may be no more important Super Bowl. Joe Namath’s guarantee of victory was only half the story. This was the coming out party for the AFL, proof that teams in this upstart league could hang with the big boys of the NFL. Broadway Joe set the tone for the next 40 years with that finger pointing to the sky.

#2 Super Bowl XXIII
San Francisco 49ers 20 Cincinnati Bengals 16
“Isn’t that John Candy?” Any question that Joe Montana could keep his head under pressure was put to rest on this famous drive. Montana, facing the most intense situation of his career to date, happened to notice the big Canadian actor when he looked towards the stand. Moments later Montana found John Taylor in the endzone and the 49ers lifted the Lombardi Trophy.

#1 Super Bowl XLIII
Pittsburgh Steelers 27 Arizona Cardinals 23

NFL betting fans were kept on the edge of their seats for every second of this battle in Tampa. It had so many moments. First there was James Harrison’s interception return for touchdown, a play that left the linebacker gulping down oxygen afterwards. Then Larry Fitzgerald gave fans in Arizona reason to believe with his perfect post route, galloping away from three defenders to score. Then Ben Roethlisberger had his own Montana moment. Time was not his friend but Big Ben still got the Steelers within scoring range. A twinkle-toed Santonio Holmes was in the endzone landing perfectly to cement a famous victory.
