NFL Preview: New York Giants

Al Dannity | Updated Oct 04, 2017

The Giants enter 2011 with little expectation but no shortage of talent. Al Dannity says it could prove an interesting year for Big Blue.

The players Defense was the big winner from the Giants’ draft with two big early picks and a steal in the later rounds. Prince Amukamara has the talent to compete as a starter from day one. The Giants will need the former Nebraska star to live up to his billing in a division with the Eagles and Cowboys, both possessing solid passing games. Marvin Austin joins the Giants defensive line, adding another weapon to a potent if under-performing unit. The most interesting signing could be Greg Jones. The linebacker was tremendously productive for Michigan State and may end up looking like a steal, having been selected in the sixth round.

Mark your calendar Those two meetings with the Eagles in Week 3 and Week 11 leap of the schedule. If the Giants are to stand any chance of winning the division, they must win at least one of these games. Having four games against NFC West opponents certainly won’t hurt Big Blue but the AFC East slate won’t be quite as pleasant. The Giants should beat Miami and Buffalo but games against the Patriots and Jets won’t be easy.

That meeting with the Jets comes in Week 16, with a home game against Dallas coming a week later. Both match-ups could have massive playoff implications for NFL betting fans. New York’s two games with the Cowboys come at the tail end of the season and may end up deciding one of the NFC’s wildcard slots.

The verdict Sometimes you just look at a schedule and see a number straight away. This Giants team just reeks of an outfit set to go 10-6. That might make the playoffs or it might see them left narrowly on the outside for the second season running. For all the quality New York can point to, they don’t quite have the game breakers to be confident of them rolling to 11 or 12 wins with ease. Likewise they lack the liabilities to become overly concerned with the prospect of a big collapse. On their day, the Giants possess the talent to make another deep run in the playoffs but only if everything comes together. That’s going to be the crucial factor in 2011. If everything can click then the Giants can make the post-season. If it doesn’t then it will be another case of what might have been.
