Avert your eyes? The Thursday night NFL matchup in Week 3 is New York Jets at Cleveland Browns, teams who combined to finish 5-27 last year. Yet, this has some intrigue!

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

When the NFL schedule was announced back in April right before the draft, football fans and executives at the NFL Network likely groaned when the league gave the world New York Jets at Cleveland Browns on Thursday night in Week 3 (NFL Network is exclusive USA TV provider for a few TNF games, including this one).

After all, Cleveland was 0-16 last year and hasn’t finished with more than three wins since 2014. The Jets were 5-11 in 2017 and have won more than five games once since 2013. However, this game actually has some interesting story lines. The main one is that the Browns surprised many around the NFL by passing on quarterback Sam Darnold with the top overall pick in the 2018 draft. The Jets happily pounced on Darnold at No. 3 overall when the Giants also passed at No. 2. So, Browns fans can see what could have been on Thursday; the guy Cleveland took, QB Baker Mayfield, hasn’t played yet this year and the team ideally doesn’t want him to at all in 2018.

The Jets are on a five-game winning streak vs. the Browns, and it’s the fourth straight year they will play. The past two were decided by only three points each. This is just the second time since December 2015 that Cleveland is a betting favourite. The favourite has covered the past eight in this series.

New York Jets

New York (1-1) was on a short week Sunday after winning in Detroit on Monday in Week 1. The Jets were sloppy in a 20-12 home loss to the Miami Dolphins. Darnold looks like he will be an excellent player some day, but rookies are going to have growing pains. He threw for 334 yards and a score vs. Miami but also was picked off twice and fumbled once, and mismanaged the clock at the end of the first half to cost his team at least a field-goal try. He also overthrew a wide-open Quincy Enunwa in the back of the end zone in the second half.

Cleveland Browns

If Cleveland had a different kicker than it might be 2-0 instead of 0-1-1 and on a 19-game winless streak. Zane Gonzalez had a potential winning field goal blocked in overtime of the Browns’ Week 1 tie vs. Pittsburgh. He missed two extra points (one to take a late lead) and two field goals (one to tie at end of game) in Sunday’s 21-18 loss in New Orleans. Expect the Browns to work out some kickers this week. The team also has cut ties with mega-talented but troubled receiver Josh Gordon. He had a TD catch in Week 1 but was inactive vs. the Saints because of a hamstring injury reportedly suffered at a promotional shoot. The Browns have covered five of their past seven on Thursday.
