The Philadelphia Eagles have a 4-6 record, but remain just a game behind the New York Giants in the NFC East standings. In facing the Detroit Lions, the Eagles get another team struggling to win games despite having loads of talent. Detroit, who are listed as +1.5 underdogs, hope to ride the momentum of a two game winning steak, while the Eagles hope to respond positively after a 45-17 drubbing at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Thanksgiving Thursday Football: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Detroit Lions

Point Spread: Eagles -1 Over/under: 46 Date: Thursday, November 16, 12:30pm ET Location:Ford Field, Detroit, MI

Philadelphia Eagles

Sam Bradford is likely to return to the line up after missing last week’s game against due to a concussion. With their started back under center, they’ll see better overall production on the offensive side of the ball. Detroit is giving up an average of 116 rushing yards per game, making it all but certain that the Eagles will be invested in getting both DeMarco Murray and Ryan Matthews involved early and often. An effective running game will help Bradford take advantage of a porous Detroit secondary.

Facing the Lions might be just what the Eagles need as they’ve been giving up an average of 374 all purpose yards per game. The point spread is currently favoring them at -1.They’ll need to focus on stopping the running game as they rank near last in the league allowing 128 yards per game. If the Lions pick up ample yardage on the ground early, it will make the secondary susceptible to the deep play. With Matt Stafford throwing 12 interceptions and the Eagles secondary also totaling 12 interceptions, that isn’t a bad game plan for Philadelphia.

Detroit Lions

While it’s too little, too late for the Lions this season, a two game winning streak may be enough to play well at home on national television and continue the winning streak. Detroit’s defense gets most of the credit for their recent success and they’ll continue their improved play against the inconsistent Eagles. The Lion’s front four can take advantage of a bad Eagles’ offensive line, making it hard for both Bradford and the rushing attack to get anything going.

Detroit has struggled to put points on the board this season, due to the inability to find balance on offense. The lack of a running game has made them predictable through the air. They’ll hope to get Ameer Abdullah involved early against a soft Eagles run defense. Without effective play from Abdullah, Stafford can count on being under pressure with a lack of open targets downfield. Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate both need to step it up and find a way to get open.

Eagles vs. Lions Prediction

One team on a downswing, the other on an upswing. If playing against a conference team on one of the biggest football days of the year doesn’t get you pumped up enough to win as the underdog at home, you probably don’t deserve to win.
