Justin Herbert Signs Extension with L.A. Chargers
Herbert is one of the most popular players in the NFL. The 25-year-old is entering just his fourth season but has certainly made a name for himself, hence the massive contract. He threw for well over 4,000 yards in each of his first three campaigns (5,014 in 2021), never fewer than 25 touchdowns, and has averaged a very good 66.9 completion percentage.
In 2022, the Chargers made the playoffs for the first time since drafting the Oregon product in 2020, although they didn’t last long, losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round.
Only Deshaun Watson has a contract with more guaranteed money ($230 million with the Cleveland Browns). On the flip side, the annual value of Herbert’s deal is the biggest in the league are $52.5 m.
Whatever L.A.’s deficiencies, there is little doubt that they go as far as Justin Herbert takes them.
The contract further highlights the different value placed on quarterbacks and other positions in 2023, especially running backs. RBs are taking pay cuts and settling for around $10 million whereas QBs are benefiting from annual values worth three to four times that amount.
