Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow last played in the second quarter of Thursday night’s match versus the Baltimore Ravens. Incidentally, his final act was a touchdown pass to Joe Mixon, but that would be it for the fourth-year Pro Bowler. Not only did the Bengals lose the game convincingly 34-20, but Burrow has an acute wrist injury that will keep him out of action until next season.

Cincinnati’s Super Bowl aspirations had already taken a hit with early season defeats, but now they look impossible. Let’s look at the numbers.

Joe Burrow Out, Bengals’ Super Bowl Odds Take Big Hit

Only the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and San Francisco 49ers had shorter odds than the Bengals’ +1100 at the start of the season.

With Friday’s news that their superstar gunslinger won’t suit up again this season, the Bengals have plummeted to +15000. To put that into context, the Atlanta Falcons share those odds and nobody genuinely thinks the Lombardi trophy is coming to Georgia this year. The Las Vegas Raiders are just behind at +20000 and they’ll be quarterbacked by a rookie with three starts under his belt.

Speaking of signal callers filling big shoes, in Cincy that duty goes to Jake Browning who completed Thursday’s match. He’s been involved in two games thus far, throwing 15 passes for eight completions, 68 yards, one touchdown and no picks.

Granted, with studs like Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins (injured too), and Tyler Boyd as receivers, Browning has excellent options. But there is no disputing that the franchise’s hopes and dreams rest on the shoulders of Joe Burrow, or in this case his throwing wrist. This is his fourth year as a pro and, unfortunately, the second since his rookie season that he will not see through to completion. Consider that in his two other campaigns – 2021 and 2022 – the Bengals played a Super Bowl and AFC Championship game.

Not helping Browning is the team’s running game. Even with a decent night in Baltimore, the Bengals are 31st with 80.9 yards on the ground per match.
