Texas A&M vs. Texas Southern NCAA Tournament Point Spread and Betting
The winner of this First Four matchup will face Midwest Region No. 1 Kansas in Fort Worth, Texas on Thursday night and no doubt lose that game by quite a large margin.
Texas Southern is in the First Four for the second straight year, knocking off No. 16 Mount St. Mary’s 60-52 in 2021 before losing by 16 to No. 1 seed Michigan in the first round. It’s only the second NCAA Tournament appearance for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and first since 2007.
Even though these two schools are only located about 200 miles apart, they haven’t played since 2007.
Texas A&M-CC Islanders
The Islanders (23-11) finished just 7-7 in Southland Conference regular-season action but knocked off regular-season champion Nicholls in the conference tournament semifinals and then upset SE Louisiana in the final. Junior Terrion Murdix was named the tournament MVP and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team along with senior Simeon Fryer. Isaac Mushila (13.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg) was the team’s best player most of the year. A&M-Corpus Christi is 17-0 this season when holding the opposition to 70 points or less. Last year, this program finished 5-19 overall. It has marked the largest year-to-year turnaround in school history. All 13 players who have taken the court this year have scored double figures in at least one game. The Islanders are 10-3 ATS in their past 13 as underdogs.
Texas Southern Tigers
Texas Southern (18-12), which is coached by former LSU coach Johnny Jones, finished second in the SWAC regular-season standings but routed first-place Alcorn State 87-62 in the conference title game. It was the 10th SWAC Tournament title in school history. PJ Henry was named the tournament MVP. Texas Southern, which doesn’t have a single player averaging double-digit points, played one of the most ridiculous non-conference schedules you will ever see with all nine games on the road an against excellent programs like Oregon, Saint Mary’s, BYU and Florida – the Tigers upset the Gators 69-54 in Gainesville on Dec. 6. It marked the first time in history a SWAC team beat a ranked SEC opponent. It was TSU’s first win over a ranked team since 2018 at Oregon. The Tigers are 9-2 ATS in their past 11 vs. teams with a winning record.
