PGA Tour Houston Open: Golf Odds and Prediction
Houston Open Background
The Houston Open had been played in the spring the week before the Masters from 2007-18 but was shifted to the fall this year and thus not part of the 2018-19 Tour season. It lost that prime pre-Masters date in part because Shell dropped its sponsorship. This will also be the last time the tournament will be held at the Golf Club of Houston, a par 72 measuring 7,441 yards. Event officials would try to set it up similar to Augusta National as a Masters warm-up. The Houston Open is moving to Memorial Park Golf Course in 2020 with that course getting a multi-million-dollar facelift.
Baseball fans might also recognize this event’s new logo as it’s similar to the one used by MLB’s Astros. That team’s owner, Jim Crane, is a major force behind this tournament and the Astros Foundation has a five-year agreement with the Tour to run it.
This tournament debuted in 1946 and was won by the legendary Byron Nelson. Arnold Palmer was a two-time champion. Jack Nicklaus never won but finished second a couple of times. The defending champion is Ian Poulter. That was very fitting because Poulter was told mistakenly a week earlier he had earned a spot in the Masters. Since that was wrong, his only ticket in was to win the Houston Open. He beat Beau Hossler in a playoff. Poulter isn’t playing this year.
Houston Open Betting Favourites
Henrik Stenson, one of three players in the field who have won major championships, is the +900 favourite. Since 2009, he has finished in the Top 10 in Houston four times, including a T6 last time it was held.
Big drop-off after Stenson in the Sports Interaction odds with Brian Harman at +2000, Cameron Champ and Daniel Berger both +2200 and Pat Perez +2800. Harman missed the cut when he played here last in 2017. Champ won a couple of weeks ago but missed the cut last week in Las Vegas. He hasn’t played here. Berger was fifth in Houston in 2016 & ’17. Perez comes off a third-place finish last week.
Canadian Golfer Odds
No golfer from Canada has won this tournament or even finished runner-up. Roger Sloan is +10000 to win. He missed the cut last week and missed the cut in his last Houston appearance in 2015. David Hearn is +12500. He last played Houston in 2016 and was 46th. Mackenzie Hughes is +20000. He has missed three straight cuts and also missed here in 2018. Michael Gligic is +35000 as he debuts here.
Houston Open Predictions
Take Stenson and Russell Henley for Top 10s but the winner at +4000 is Keegan Bradley. He has made seven cuts in eight appearances in Houston with three Top 10s.
