British Open Preview: Tiger Will Roar Once More
The Open Championship returns to St Andrews. Can Tiger Woods claim his first post-comeback major at the Old Course? Al Dannity likes his chances.
Time to man up
Tiger Woods has two choices in St Andrews. He can play with the calm and solemn manner he’s trotted out so far since his comeback or he can play like he wants to win the Open Championship. There is no room for compromise here. Since his comeback the media hasn’t stopped probing Tiger about his private life. Journalists rightly ask about how it’s affecting his game and if he feels concerned about the impact on fans. Tiger has, for the most part, politely provided non-answers. Frankly there is only one answer that can satisfy the public’s lust; victory.
Tiger has recorded solid but unspectacular finishes in each of the year’s first two majors, now it’s time to bring out the big guns. If he is serious about being the greatest of all time then Tiger Woods needs to humiliate all opponents like he did the last two times he visited the Old Course. Golf fans are sick of this mildly contrite Tiger Woods. It feels phoney, and it isn’t the Tiger we know. It’s time for Tiger to go out and dominate. He must play so well that he gives the fans no alternative but to love him. This weekend I like Woods to become the first man to lift the claret jug three times at St Andrews. Bet on Tiger Woods at +400 with Sports Interaction to win the Open Championship.
Great value in the field
While the Old Course is a test for even the finest Golfer, it also rewards players who are willing to attack. Keep that in mind with any Golf betting decisions you make. I like Phil Mickelson at +1600 with Sports Interaction this weekend. Lefty offers a better bet in St Andrews than Rory McIlroy or Lee Westwood, who spearhead the European challenge.
Two-time champion Padraig Harrington is a steal at +1800. The Irishman has the kind of diverse game which will allow him to stay in contention until Sunday. US Open champion Graeme McDowell shouldn’t be discounted and is a smart bet at +3000.
Mix it up
There’s more than the straight title chase to keep an eye on in St Andrews. The opening groups offer some interesting battles. Defending champion Stewart Cink is a good bet at +250 over heavyweights Ernie Els and Ian Poulter. I like Y.E. Yang to come out on top at +225 in his group with Luke Donald and Ricky Barnes.
There are also Golf bets for those of you feeling a little more adventurous. Sports Interaction’s Open Championship Pinata Pick offers players a great chance to win big. Once you place a bet you get assigned a golfer at random, at odds of +12500. You might even draw Tiger Woods.
