2022 Valero Texas Open: PGA Tour Betting Odds
Rory McIlroy is favoured on the golf odds.
The Masters is next week and the winner of this event gets the final spot in the first major of the year if not having already qualified. Most big-name players, though, after a very busy stretch that included the Players Championship and last week’s Match Play, are taking this week off to prepare for Augusta on their own. There was notable Masters news last week with three-time winner Phil Mickelson opting not to play.
This will be the 100th Texas Open, although it has been held at a handful of courses throughout the San Antonio area. TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course, designed by Hall of Famer Greg Norman, opened in 2010, has hosted since and is a par 72 at about 7,500 yards. This is the sixth-oldest professional tournament in golf worldwide, the third-oldest on the PGA Tour and the longest held in the same city.
The defending champion is native Texan Jordan Spieth, who didn’t need a victory to gain entry into the 2021 Masters. Spieth shot a final-round 66 to finish at 18-under 270 and two shots up on Charley Hoffman, who was runner-up for a second straight year. Spieth had the fewest putts in the field for the week with 98. His winning score was the second-lowest since the tournament moved to TPC San Antonio.
Scottie Scheffler, who won the WGC-Match Play on Sunday to rise to No. 1 in the world, is among those not playing. He became the 25th all-time player to reach No. 1.
Valero Texas Open Golf Odds
Rory McIlroy is the +750 favourite and it’s a pretty big surprise he’s playing considering he hasn’t in this tournament since 2013 when he was runner-up to Martin Laird. McIlroy also skipped last week’s Match Play for family reasons. He usually plays that, which is why he usually doesn’t play here.
Jordan Spieth is +1400 to repeat. He also had a runner-up here in 2015 by four shots to Jimmy Walker. Hideki Matsuyama is +1800 with Abraham Ancer at +2200 and Bryson DeChambeau +2500. DeChambeau hasn’t played much this year due to injury and wasn’t a factor at the Match Play. He hasn’t had success in two trips to this event, either. Ancer’s best result at the Texas Open is T23 last year. Matsuyama debuted here in 2021 and was T30.
Two years ago, Canadian Corey Conners had to Monday qualify just to get in and then won at 20-under 268, the lowest winning score at TPC San Antonio. He’s the lone Canadian winner of the event. Conners was the top Canadian last year as well at T14. Adam Hadwin was T23 and Nick Taylor T59, while Roger Sloan, David Hearn and Michael Gligic all missed the cut. Conners is a +2000 fourth favourite this week with Hadwin +3300, Adam Svensson +12500, Taylor +12500, Sloan +30000 and Gligic +50000.
Valero Texas Open Golf Predictions
We predicted Charley Hoffman last year to win at +3300 and as noted he finished runner-up for the second straight Texas Open. He has five top-five finishes at the event since 2016, most of anyone. Let’s roll with him again at +6600.
