2022 PGA Tour: Sentry Tournament Of Champions Golf Betting Odds
The 2022 portion of the PGA Tour’s wraparound season begins as usual in Hawaii this week with the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Spain’s Jon Rahm is favoured on the golf odds.
As the tournament title suggests, this event is only open to PGA Tour winners from last season or the start of this one. That’s not to say every winner is playing. Some Europeans prefer to stay overseas early in the year and play big-money events there.
One rare commitment to the tournament is Phil Mickelson, who hasn’t played here since 2001. He qualified by memorably winning the 2021 PGA Championship and has won this event twice, but way back in 1994 & ’98 and at a different course. Because it’s a limited field, there’s no cut.
The Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui is now the home track, a par 73 (only par 73 on Tour) at nearly 7,600 yards. Despite the length, it’s a pretty easy course unless the winds are howling. Six of the past seven winners have been at least 21 under par.
Americans have won the Sentry Tournament of Champions 11 straight years, with Harris English the defending champion. He made a 6-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat Joaquin Niemann – they both finished 72 holes at 25 under.
It was English’s first win in about seven years but he would win again last June, also in a playoff, at the Travelers Championship. The last repeat winner here was Aussie Geoff Ogilvy in 2010. Ogilvy is one of four players to win the tournament at least twice since it moved to Kapalua in 1999.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Golf Odds
World No. 1 Jon Rahm is the +800 favorite. He has finished Top 10 four straight years at this event with a best of runner-up to Dustin Johnson in 2018. Even though Johnson has won here twice, he’s not playing this week.
Justin Thomas is +900 with Collin Morikawa +1000. Thomas is also a two-time winner here, in 2020 and 2017. He was third last year. Morikawa has played this event twice and finished T7 both times. He could overtake Rahm for No. 1 this week.
Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland are each +1200. DeChambeau has a best result of seventh here and Hovland made his tournament debut in 2021 and was T31.
Xander Schauffele (+1400) didn’t win a Tour event last year, but he’s in the field thanks to his gold-medal performance at the Tokyo Olympics. Defending champion Harris English is +3300.
Stan Leonard is the lone Canadian to win the tournament, way back in 1958 by a stroke over Billy Casper. Last year, Nick Taylor finished T29 and Mackenzie Hughes tied for last at T41 but still cashed a nice check. Alas, no Canadians qualified this year.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Golf Predictions
Back Thomas and Rahm for Top 10s but the winner at +2500 is Sungjae Im. He debuted here last year and was T5. Im already has a win in the new season, coming in October at the Shriners Children’s Open.
