2021 Sony Open In Hawaii: PGA Tour Betting Odds
While last week’s 2021-opening Tournament of Champions was held at the Kapalua Resort in Maui, the Sony Open is held in Honolulu on the big island in Hawaii. The front and back nines of Waialae Country Club are switched for the PGA Tour event only. It’s a par 70 measuring around 7,050 yards and it’s the 56th consecutive year the course serves as host, one of the longest streaks going on the Tour.
No one has won the Sony Open more than twice, which four players have done. Four of them went back-to-back, most recently Jimmy Walker in 2015. The 2017 Sony Open was memorable because Justin Thomas finished at 27-under 253 – which also included a rare 59 round – the lowest total in PGA Tour history.
The vast majority of winners at the Sony Open have been Americans but the defending champion is Aussie Cameron Smith. Usually, the scores are crazy low in the tournament, but he finished at just 11-under 269 and beat Brendan Steele in a playoff. Smith was two shots behind with two holes to play in regulation but forced the playoff by sinking an eight-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole and then won it with a two-putt par from 10 feet on the first extra hole. Smith has not won since and is +2800 to repeat. It was the third straight even-numbered year to feature a playoff at the Sony Open.
Sony Open in Hawaii Betting Odds
Simpson is priced at +1200 and he comes off a tie for 17th Sunday at the Tournament of Champions. He finished at 16 under, nine shots behind winner Harris English, who beat Joaquin Niemann in a playoff. Simpson hasn’t won this tournament but has a few Top 10s, including a T3 last year, missing the playoff by a shot.
Collin Morikawa, English and Patrick Reed are all +1800. Morikawa has a lot of family in Hawaii and visited there plenty growing up. He was T7 last week and T21 in this tournament a year ago. English’s victory Sunday was his first anywhere since November 2013. He has three Top 10s here but not since 2015. Reed was T21 last week and missed the cut at the 2020 Sony Open. Niemann is +2200 after losing in the playoff Sunday. He was T57 in his debut here a year ago.
Some of the big names who played last week like Justin Thomas (T3), Xander Schauffele (T5), Bryson DeChambeau (T7), Jon Rahm (T7) and Dustin Johnson (T11) are skipping this tournament.
No Canadian has won this event. Richard Zokol finished second by a shot to Lanny Wadkins in 1988. Corey Conners finished T12 last year at 6 under, while Nick Taylor was T32. Roger Sloan, Graham DeLaet, David Hearn, Mackenzie Hughes and Michael Gligic missed the cut. Hughes is +10000 this week, Taylor is +15000 and Sloan +20000.
Sony Open in Hawaii Predictions
Take Simpson and former champion Matt Kuchar for Top 10s, but the winner is Sungjae Im at +2000. He comes off a T5 at the Tournament of Champions and hasn’t been worse than 21st in two visits to this event.
