Toronto Tempo vs. Atlanta Dream WNBA preview and prediction

It doesn’t get any easier for the reeling Toronto Tempo, who have lost eight straight and 13 of their last 15. They have to face the Dream, a team that has beaten them three times already this season, Monday in Atlanta at 8 p.m. ET.

A promising expansion debut has gone off the rails as Toronto has not won in nearly a month and has not recorded a road triumph in more than seven weeks. The drought continued Thursday with a 97-83 setback at Portland. 

Atlanta is well-positioned for a playoff berth at 19-12 overall, but the team has lost two of three, including a 79-74 defeat at the hands of surging Washington on Friday.

Atlanta has won its three previous games against the Tempo by an average of 17 points. Last time out, the Dream defeated Toronto in mid-July, 111-92.

Atlanta is a massive -14.5 favourite at home with a -950 moneyline on the WNBA odds, while the Tempo are at +625. The over/under for this contest is 186.5. 

The Dream have covered twice against Toronto this season, but did not cover a 14.5-point spread in a 94-87 victory the last time these teams met in Atlanta in June. 

The Tempo are just 1-9 straight up and 3-7 against the spread in their last 10. Atlanta is 7-3 straight up, but just 2-8 against the spread during that same stretch.

The Tempo have lost their last eight by an average of 17.9 points, allowing 101.2 points per game during this putrid stretch. Toronto would have difficulty stopping a primary school team right now.

Brittney Sykes (20.1 ppg) is still out, and now there is a chance that Marina Mabrey, who leads the team with 20.2 points per game, could be out Monday with the same neck issues that caused her to miss a game against Golden State just over a week ago. Mabrey has scored just 21 combined points on 7-of-20 shooting in her last two games.

Nyara Sabally had 17 points, new acquisition Aneesah Morrow had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Julie Allemande had 11 points and 12 assists against Portland. 

Atlanta Dream

The Dream shot a season-low 32.5 per cent against Washington on Friday, including just 29 per cent (6-for-21) from beyond the arc. Allisha Gray, who is averaging 20.7 points against the Tempo, had 26 points, the 15th time she has tallied 20 or more points this season.

Angel Reese had 16 rebounds, but she only scored seven points on 1-of-12 shooting. The Dream can’t afford too many nights like that.

Reserve guard Te-Hina Paopao is the only Atlanta player not available on Monday. She is dealing with a leg injury.  

WNBA Prediction: Who will win Tempo vs. Dream?

The Dream are going to get the season sweep in this one. It’s just a matter of whether they will cover the huge spread or not.

No metrics are showing Toronto emerging from their rut this evening, and the Dream are surely annoyed after only scoring 74 points on Friday. This should be an easy win for them. Take Atlanta to extend the Tempo’s misery, 104-87.
